Danny and Vinny Star In: "Superbad"
By Steve Czaban on January 28, 2008
If you haven’t seen the movie “Superbad” yet, do yourself a favor, and knock that one out.
While you are at it, if you see the movie, and know anything about how the Commanders are being run at the moment, please note all the similarities.
In “Superbad” two high school losers go through separation anxiety leading up to college when they will attend different schools. Seth and Evan are played masterfully by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera.
Of course, you’ll immediately identify Seth and Michael as “Danny and Vinny” when you think about the Commanders.
Seth is like Danny. Totally insecure. A bully whenever he can get away with it, but a total ***** everywhere else. He talks big about getting laid, but has no idea how to actually close the deal. Like Danny, however, Seth is SURE that he’s got the ultimate “plan” to score some sweater.
Evan is Seth’s equally loser-riffic buddy. Only Evan has a little more self-awareness of his own dorkdom. Because of this, Evan keeps a lower profile, knows his limitations, and doesn’t talk nearly as much ****. In other worse, exactly like one Vincent Cerrato.
The movie goes from a weak and clichéd angle to get laid, to even worse execution at every step of the way. It ends, with both guys definitely NOT getting laid and on the floor of their parents house in sleeping bags hugging each other and saying “I love you.” (sorry to spoil that, but it hardly compromises the movie)
It is all so eerily similar to how Danny and Vinny have gone about their current head coaching search. The only difference, is that in the movie, you are laughing your *** off. As a Commander fan like me, you are grabbing your head in sheer horror.
A lot transpired over the weekend, and most of us think Danny specifically did it over a Friday and Saturday to avoid the sheer scorn that will no doubt come his way. Al Saunders and Gregg Williams have been whacked. Greg Blache has been moved up to D-Coord and Jim Zorn has been given his first ever coordinator job on offense.
That my friends, is “continuity.”
In a separate release, Snyder indicated that the franchise will still be called the “Washington Commanders” and will remain at FedEx Field for 2008. So at least we’ve got that for “continuity.”
The rest of the coaching staff is pretty much dead meat, but Snyder did go out of his way to refute a report that QB coach Bill Lazor has been fired.
In recent times, only Jerry Jones last year dared to hire his own o-coordinator (Jason Garrett) and install him before a new head coach was named. But that was unusual, and he’s Jerry Jones.
Snyder has gone him one-better on the “crazy” scale and now has two big pieces of furniture that come with the house, and cannot be moved.
Any coach who takes the head job now, is either delusional or desparate. Probably both.
My new “hot guess” is the 31 year old Josh McDaniels of the Patriots will get this job. He’s perfect for Snyder. Younger and easily bullied, McDaniels would be an East Coast version of the disastrous Lane Kiffin hire in Oakland.
Only McDaniels’ resume is considerably thinner than even Kiffin’s.
I always wondered what the post-Gibbs era would look and feel like under Snyder. There would be no other coach capable of pleasing the masses as the Gibbs hire had done. There is no other coach ever who will get the joykilling control that Marty Schottenheimer had.
I sort of sensed that Snyder might get really unhinged in his frantic pursuit of a championship (getting laid, in owner terms) but I never imagined all this.
Wow.
Just step back and take it all in, Commander fans. Its even more spectacularly f’ed up than we can get our heads around
