Mods if you can please sticky this post.

I'm going to start on my film review, as I did last year. I want to have this open for debate if you don't agree with my viewpoints, I would love to hear from you.

I want to review at least 2 or 3 games of each guy I review. I want to talk about how they would fit in with our team, position, strengths and weaknesses. I am NOT going to base my opinions or lean towards someone else's opinion. I want to have my own opinion on each of these guys, and they will be strong opinions.

If you have any recommendations for players you want me to review, I would LOVE to. I am going to start with defensive lineman first. Would love all your feedback.

do preston smith and nate orchard.I see him lined him inside a lot and he is really quick for the guards to handle, could be a great 1-2 tandem with Crawford.

Alvin Dupree (Edge Rusher) Kentucky

Positives:
Excellent size. Relentless, never stops. Moves all over the place. Stands up, puts his hand on ground, left side, ride side, used in coverage. Has an outstanding first step. Excellent make up speed, does great job setting edge. Even when he takes bad angles, his speed allows him to catch up to play. Really nice bend and dip to his hips. Definitely a fast-twitch player.
Negatives: Needs to develop more pass rush moves, tends to get by with his speed rush only. Difficulty shedding blocks in run game, rarely see him make a stop against the run. Overruns the plays a lot and gets overaggressive, especially when rushing QB.
Comparison and Where He Fits on Our Team: Really like the player! With his athletic ability and size, his upside is through the roof. I can see him in the Von Miller role for us meaning start at SAM linebacker, and rushing in the nickel.

Preston Smith (Edge Rusher, DT) Mississippi State

Positives:
Excellent size and length. Disrupts the QB a lot with his length and getting in his vision. Can move around the line. In college, played as a 3 tech, nose tackle, RDE and LDE. Excellent against the run and shedding blocks in run game. Very physical player. Plays with a lot of power. Excellent tackler, makes a lot of tackles for d lineman. Takes on a lot of double teams, and splits them. Moves outstanding for a guy of his size. Outstanding in the red zone.

Negatives: Worried a little about his motor, doesn't go all out every play. Does not possess elite athleticism or fast twitch to play defensive end
Comparison and Where He Fits on Our Team: Reminds me of a slightly more explosive Tyrone Crawford. Kind of in between a 3 tech and LDE. I like better as a 3 tech. LOVE this player. Outstanding. Be an excellent interior rusher complement for Crawford, and I believe his ceiling is higher then Crawfords

I loved him as a 3 tech option too...until he weighed in at 270 at the senior bowl. I guess he could still add weight, but that threw me off when I saw his weight. I think he could still be a pretty good SDE, but I'm with you in thinking that he'd be a better 3 tech

Honestly 270 doesn't worry me too much. Maybe gain 10 lbs or so, but 270 isn't super small. There are interior DT's in NFL around that size. I want this guy inside. Imagine him and Crawford inside in nickel and in obvious passing situations... Can be extremely disruptive.

I know he may go too high, but I'm curious to see what you think of Dante Fowler Jr. from Florida. My 1st round pet cat.... Thank you for doing this! I really enjoyed all your posts last year.

If you could include the players school that would be appreciated.

Down the road when you are doing QBs... Look at Rakeem Cato from Marshall. Doubt he is drafted due to size but he is a winner.

Xavier Cooper from Wash St and Odighizuwa from UCLA are probably my 2 favorite d lineman in this draft....take a look at them when you get a chance

Crawford was at 273 early this season. He talked about his weight when they first moved him to DT.

You don't think Crawford is explosive as a 3tech? I could see that as compared to DEs but as a DT I think he is very explosive.

Really? Interesting, I thought he was in the low 280's.

I just assumed Smith was bigger by look and the way he played in season. Idk, maybe it makes sense though...DE's typically get drafted earlier so his agent could have told him to slim down a little to appeal to a wider variety of teams.

Players tend to lose weight prior to the draft activities because it makes them more explosive an their timed speed improves.

Crawford got his weight down to play DE. I assume that he gained some back as the season progressed.

I love Preston Smith but Crawford is far more quick twitch.

If we give up our 2-3 to move up for Dupree it certainly isn't to play LB. He'd be our SDE.

I assume the Dupree comment was not intended for me, but I'll address it anyway.

Some people think that a way to get one of the elite but undersized pass rushers onto the team would be to use him like Denver used Von Miller. VM plays SLB on base downs and moves to DE in obvious passing situations. He also blitzes from his SLB position in the base and at times they have the DE on the opposite side hold up his rush or drop into a shallow zone which gives them a 3-4 type look.

The Giants also moved Mathias Kiwanuka back and forth between SLB and DE over the years. He had 4.5 sacks in 10 games his 2nd year in the league while playing SLB.

Think of it as if you had a pass rushing specialist that comes in on obvious passing situations but instead of being on the bench on base downs, is on the field as the SLB.

Seattle does it to some extent with Bruce Irvin, but he does not line up as a DE nearly as often as Von Miller because Irvin plays WLB and stays on the field in passing situations as a Nickel LB. Irvin did have 6.5 sacks this season.and Von Miller had 14.

The Cowboys did try doing this to some extent with Kyle WIlber but he is obviously not an elite pass rusher.

I do think there would be some Pros and Cons to doing this. It would get an extra pass rusher on the field in the base and it would allow you to draft a guy that has elite quickness for pass rushing without having to have the size to hold up against the run as a DE. On the downside, if use a 1st round pick to get this player it's most likely because of his pass rushing ability while his ability as an off the line LB might not be 1st round worthy.

Having said the above, at 6-4, 267 there is no reason no reason that Dupree can't play all downs as a DE.

The better comparison with Von Miller would be Vic Beasley. Would include Davis Tull too.
