Filed to ESPN: As Len Pasquarelli initially reported, Saints will NOT place their franchise tag on S Darren Sharper. He'll be a free agent.

per Schefter's twitter account

Any interest in signing him to a 2 yr deal while releasing Hamlin? Sharper is a playmaker, something we haven't had at the safety position for a long, long time.

You can search my previous life's posting history and find that I advocated for Sharper big time and was shot down by most posters on this board. It would all depend on the deal he got. I'd be OK with a one year deal, but I would take a look at Rolle, too.

Personally, I like our safeties. Despite what some say about their FF and Ints, I thought they did a bang up job against the pass and run.

JMO, though.

Too old. It seems we may have a chance at Earl Thomas, so I would prefer a younger player like him.

I'd prefer somebody younger.

I think Sharper ultimately re-signs with NO.

Don't like him?
I don't think there has ever been a time in my life when I wanted a 34 going on 35 year old Free Agent. It has nothing to do with liking or disliking him.

I would prefer somebody younger, someone that will be around and still be productive at a high level five years from now.

It would be ironic if we cut Ken Hamlin, signed Sharper, Saints sign Hamlin, and Hamlin makes a game winning interception for a TD against us in next year NFC Championship game in our house.

Maybe so but the guy is almost the Brett Favre of the safety position. He was in the running for Defensive Player of the Year. That cannot go unnoticed.

I say yes. Everyteam he's been on he's been a playmaker. Hamlin just isn't cutting it. His production dosen't equal his salary. I think he will stay in N.O though.

we can get a quality safety in the draft.

heck, m hamlin was a playmaking safety at clemson as well. maybe the staff thinks he can get it done?

if not, we can get a guy like allen/burnett in the draft.

i'd prefer to go younger than sharper.

Why do you think we would have any chance at Earl Thomas. We can't get far enough up to do that.
