I went to my sons end of year Plano Football League pee wee banquet and the guest speaker was none other than Daryl Johnston. He spoke to the kids about teamwork and working hard as a team.

He said that football is the ultimate team sport. I paraphrase Daryl Johnsonton here: "The Commanders are perfect example of why you can't buy championships in football. He said it may work in baseball, but not football. Football is about a team and not individuals. You have to have team chemistry."

Other points of interest.

* His favorite team growing up was the Miami Dolphins. He really started watching football in 1972 the year the Dolphins went undefeated.

* Some of his favorite players in the NFL today are Brian Urlacher and LaDainian Tomlinson. Said Philip Rivers will be a star for years to come.

* He was hit the hardest in the NFL by Chuck Cecil and Ronnie Lott.

* Very diplomatic answer but said some of his best friends that he had on the Cowboys were Mark Tuinei, Mark Stepnoski and Jay Novacek.

* Said the only team that offered him a scholarship was Syracuse. He confronted the coach about a rumor much later about the reason he received a scholarship. The coach confirmed that one of the recruits they had targeted changed his mind and went to Penn St. Said they were considering Daryl and a two other guys, but ultimately decided on Daryl because they figured he would stick around at least four years and be a good practice player.

* His longest run in the NFL was 18 yards.

* His worst play in the NFL was in a game against the NY Giants (I believe he was talking about the 1993 season ending game against the Giants...the legendary Emmitt game, but not sure) Anyway said he got hit fumbled the ball and that eventhough the ball was right next to him his arm was numb and he could not reach out to grab the ball. Said fortunately the defense bailed him out.

* Really wanted to be on the field when Emmitt broke the all time rushing record.

* Said some of the players could not believe that Jimmy said put it in 3 inch letters that Dallas will win the NFC championship game against the 49ers.

* Never mentioned TO by name, but does not like the celebrations that bring attention to the individual. Said he has to bite his tongue quite often during broadcasts due to such behavior. Loves the way LaDaininian just hands the ball to the ref after his TDs.

* What he loves the most about being a broadcaster is that he gets to talk to the players on a regular basis and stay in touch with the game.

It really was a thrill and I can not even truly explain it. Like Hos said above, Moose is a class act. He was so sincere and unassuming. He was a real treat to listen too. Walked around and asked the kids questions. Could not have asked for a better representative to speak to the kids about football.

...really fortunate to have ex-Cowboys come to your functions and spend time with the kids.

Up here this Friday I will be taking some of the kids from our peewee football team to a camp being held by some ex-CFL football players. Although these are not NFL players it's just as significant to 9 and 10 year olds just learning the game to be able to attend a camp manned by professional football players.

Moose sounds like he would be a great one to have at a camp. Carries himself well and has a good grasp of the team concept and bringing it to younger kids.

Hopefully your son got a chance to spend some time with Moose. You have to take out some old tapes of the 92 and 93 seasons to show your son what Moose was all about.
