Surveying the Dallas Cowboys mock drafts

by Dave Halprin (Grizz) Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 12:07:36 PM EDT

Since there isn’t much Dallas Cowboys news going on at the moment and with the Scouting Combine just around the corner, I thought this would be a good time for a survey of mock drafts. These mocks are fun to look at but until moves are made in free agency they are semi-useless. Although, the Cowboys might not be major players in free agency this year except with their own free agents, so our needs come draft day may be very similar to what they are today.
Anyway, here’s a quick survey of some popular draft sites/gurus. Enjoy!
Mel Kiper
22 Dallas Cowboys (from CLE) Mario Manningham, WR Michigan
28 Dallas Cowboys Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois
Don Banks
22 RB Felix Jones Arkansas Jr. 6-0 205 If the Cowboys don't package their two No. 1's in an effort to move up and take Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, maybe they'll sit tight and settle for the Hogs' other play-making rusher. Jones would replace Julius Jones, and become the new half of the Marion Barber-Jones backfield tandem.
28 CB Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie Tenn. State Sr. 6-2 181 The Cowboys need someone solid opposite cornerback Terence Newman, and the likes of Anthony Henry and Jacques Reeves really isn't getting it done. Rodgers-Cromartie had a great Senior Bowl showing despite his small-school label, and the success of his cousin, San Diego's Antonio Cromartie, also adds to the first-round buzz he has generated in recent weeks.
Todd McShay
  1. Dallas Cowboys (from 10-6 Cleveland) -- Sam Baker, OT, USC
Record: 13-3 | Needs: CB, WR, OT, RB, ILB
Previous mock selection: Mario Manningham*, WR, Michigan
Assuming owner Jerry Jones doesn't package picks to trade up, expect Dallas to use its two picks to address needs at corner, receiver, offensive tackle and possibly running back. Baker's stock is dropping after an injury-plagued senior season and a mediocre showing at the Senior Bowl, but he possesses the athleticism and technique to surprise a lot of people at the next level.
  1. Dallas Cowboys -- Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
Record: 13-3 | Needs: CB, WR, OT, ILB, RB
Previous mock selection: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
If owner Jerry Jones can't strike a deal for McFadden, he could settle for Arkansas' other first-round running back prospect. Felix Jones is a speedster who could complement current Dallas RB Marion Barber well and provide a home run threat in the return game.
Scout.com
  1. Cowboys(from Browns) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 187 Michigan Junior Even though the Cowboys are picking up Terrell Owens' roster bonus next season, that doesn't mean they shouldn't think about the future. T.O. and Terry Glenn are in their thirties, so adding a young playmaker like Mario Manningham will give Dallas a receiver to build around.
Previous mock draft selection: Same
  1. Cowboys Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB 6-1 183 Tennessee State Senior The Cowboys got a receiver with their first pick that they can mold for the future, and now they will upgrade their defense. The secondary is a concern, and adding depth and a playmaker is ideal. Rodgers-Cromartie is rising fast up draft boards and may end up being a steal for the Cowboys.
Previous mock draft selection: Sam Baker
The Sports Xchange
22 DAL Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
28 DAL Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas
Pete Prisco
  1. Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois
  1. Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
Scott Wright
  1. AQIB TALIB
CB | Kansas | Jacques Reeves is set to become a free agent and anyone who watched Dallas in '07 saw him get picked on early and often anyway so at the very least the Cowboys will need an upgrade in the nickel and if Anthony Henry ever makes his long-rumored move to safety then corner will become even more of a concern. Timed speed might be an issue with Aqib Talib but you can't question his size, athleticism or playmaking ability and there is a decent chance he could be long gone by this point, especially if he runs well in workouts. Wideout and running back will be possibilities here as well.
  1. FELIX JONES
RB | Arkansas | With their second #1 pick the Cowboys could feel like they are playing with house money to a degree and while everyone assumes that Arkansas alumnus Jerry Jones wants Darren McFadden he might have to settle for another Hog running back. Julius Jones is an unrestricted free agent who is not expected back and Felix Jones would be a perfect replacement, providing some lightning to Marion Barber's thunder. Felix was also an All-American kick returner in college so that would be an added bonus. Wideout could be another possibility here since Terry Glenn has been wearing down.
Personally, I like Don Banks' mock the best of those listed above.

He did get one thing right, as much as I love a good mock draft, they are pretty useless until after free agency.

LOL. I'll bet Jerry fools the experts and none of the above are Cowboys next season.

All these mocks are consistent with most around here that we will go RB, WR or CB in the first round. I can't imagine they are that far off the mark.

"supply" would probably have been a better choice of words.

Well, there's some OTs in the mix there, and I wouldn't be suprised if we picked up a lineman if he's the best available. Also some help for the interior LBs wouldn't be out of order... and I'm never opposed to more pass rushers, personally.

So I guess I'll go with the "lets see what happens with free agency" group and take the best available. I don't it's necessary to take a RB or WR in the first round... but if we don't upgrade through FA, I would like some rather considerable investment be made in the draft in the secondary.

Don't need to spend a first rounder for a backup running back. WR/CB with our two picks. Anything else and we are doomed to repeat 2007.
