RUMORS FLY OF CARR-FOR-RICKY TRADE

On Monday, we surmised that the Texans have floated the notion that they intend to select USC tailback Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick in the draft in order to avoid criticism from the Longhorns lovers that the lure of playing for his hometown Texans prompted Texas quarterback Vince Young to skip his senior season. (A reader also raised with us another solid possibility -- that the report was a trial balloon aimed at determining what the local reaction would be to not taking Young -- and we're told that the local reaction was decidedly negative.)

But the Bush report also might have been intended to throw potential focus off of rumors that are now emerging -- and these are rumors only -- of a looming trade between the Texans and Dolphins.

Under the deal, as we've heard it, the Texans would send quarterback David Carr to Miami for running back Ricky Williams (a former Longhorn) and a third-round draft pick.

Williams is under contract through 2007. Carr is due to receive an $8 million option bonus in February, which would extend his contract through 2008.

Again, these are rumors only -- and we're not suggesting that this trade will go down. But if it should happen it clears the way for the Texans to select Young.

Stay tuned.

I would too, Juke. They're give the keys and the Carr just to get a tricycle in return.

Seriously, if they trade Carr, I think they set their franchise back another three-four years. The hype around the city for VY is at epic proportions. However, I think it would be dumb of the Texans to draft him just to please the fans. I know they prolly took a hit financially this year due to all the empty seats, but winning cures all. I don't think drafting yet another young QB who won't be ready for who knows how long is the way to go.

Houston can't be that stupid, can they? A 2nd plus Ricky is at least worth thinking about but a 3rd plus a guy that only a year ago quit on his team and lives on another planet? Not enough.

As for setting the team back, when you've won 1 game the previous year, you can't really go any lower. I kinda like Carr but maybe he could benefit from a change of scenery also. If you draft Young your team might stink to high heaven but at least they wouldn't be as deadly dull AND bad as they are now. Reggie Bush is going to be great but Young is from Houston. It seems like a match.

I live in Houston and don't believe in Carr at all. I see Tim Couch all over again. Vince Young would at least be exciting to watch even though long term he may be worse than Carr. Wins and losses aside - VY would be fun in Houston.

I live in Houston and disagree. Did Carr regress? Yes I'd say he did. This year the whole team regressed.

Young wouldn't excite me at all, tho, as an alternative. All I'd see is another struggling young QB. The same as the Texans already have. And from every scouting report/article I've read about Young, he needs 2-3 years to develop. If I'm the Texans, I don't want to go thru another young QBs growing pains for the foreseeable future.

This trade makes sense to me.

Williams is pretty durable as opposed to Davis.
The Dolphins need a QB for the future. Sage, Cleo, nor Gus arent going to be their guy.

Vince being a native player would be a good PR move and to me he has a lot of potential.

I can see how u can say that but dont you think the fact that they have had the WORSE oline in the NFL every year he has been has contributed to his undoing?

So Houston gets Ricky Williams and a 3rd? I would jump on that if I was Houston. Armed w/ a 2nd and 2 3rd's they should be able to get a good o-line put together, especially if it is true that Kubiak is taking the reins in H-Town.

Pick the Hometown hero, which will buy the franchise a couple more years of rebuilding time.

If the Texans want Vince Young, and the fins want David Carr, makes perfect sense.

David Carr for Ricky Williams?

Carr was just given his roster bonus this week, he is not leaving Houston. It appears they wanted to take away all doubts about their intention of keeping Carr and going after Bush.

I don't think he was given the roster bonus yet. He is due a roster bonus and I believe that kicks in this March. Houston just announced they would honor the bonuse when that time rolls around. That is not binding, they could change their minds.

Vince was on the radio this morning. It was a short interview.

Talked about the Rose Bowl. How the UT players felt disrespected leading up to the game. They were mad, they wanted to take the attn away from USC. Gave luv to his teammates. Said he's gonna finish his degree no matter what.

Said he came out cuz of a couple reasons. Timing (felt he's accomplished all he could at UT), the possibility of being drafted by the Texans, and of course money. He wants to play for Houston.

Said no one from the Texans has contacted him regarding being drafted. He's friends w/some of the players, and they've talked, but not about that. Said if it doesn't happen, Houston will always be his hometown and he'll "rep it to his fullest."

He also said he wouldn't mind if the Titans drafted him and he could sit behind McNair. He's taught him so much and he wouldn't mind learning more from him.

It does not appear Houston is going to change their minds it appears they are going after Bush and they will keep Carr. Anything is possiable but with the overall fan fair here in Houston over Bush I don't see anyway that Houston will not take Bush which also pretty much goes hand in hand with staying with Carr.

I think you are right unless they just get a great offer to trade down.

I definatly see a way. Reggie Bush has not declared yet, so far as I know, and it's already the 11th. If he doesn't file by the 15th, he won't be in the draft. How would that impact the rumor of Houston trying to trade for Ricky and trade Carr I wonder?

Just wondering if the Texans passed on Young why the Saints wouldn't take him. I don't see/hear that mentioned at all. It's always he's gonna be a Texan or Titan.

I think Carr is on the fast track to being a bust; in Houston anyway. He needs a change of address.

If the Texans are smart they'll draft Vincent. Home town kid, will sell tickets and will give them 100% everytime. Not to mention he's a bonafide winner. The guy has no quit in him at all.
