Amen. Punishment is not the solution.The league needs to stop punishing players by making them miss games. It hurts the fans and their teammates more than it hurts the players themselves. Fine them the equivalent of game checks and require them to do off-season community service projects or make them play in the pro-bowl or something.
Then again, maybe the league thinks the problem is initiating with the teams, and that's why the punishment has them missing games instead. That probably *was* the case at one time, but with the advent of FA and the cottage industry around athlete preparation that's sprung up around the league these days, I assume it's the players themselves who are getting into substance trouble and not the team trainers pushing them.
