Dawand Jones Tackle Ohio State

I was looking at a few offensive lineman prospect today who might be there at 58. Dawand Jones from Ohio State drew my attention:

6'8 375 LBS with a 7-5 Wingspan. That is like the old days at the position when we had Flozel, Columbo starting for us. He is an absolute monster in the run game. He possesses good lateral quickness and has vice grips as hands. He might struggle against quickness, but if he get his hands on you, forget it.

He has played mostly at Right Tackle, but many believe he can play either side. Taking him would allow Tyler Smith to become the team's new starter at Left Guard and create a powerful left side once Tyron retires or departs.

Broderick Jones, Schmitz are my favorite lineman, but cannot see them using a 1st rd pick this year in that area, Jones in the 2nd rd would ideally fit the need as well.

He is an old schooled type of Tackle, but could be a nice value pick.

remember the huge OT Becton of the Jets ? he could never stay healhy and i dont think he played at all last season,guys that big have huge injury concerns.

I hear you, but not all big lineman are Becton, either. Orlando Brown who has similar size has yet to miss a game in his career.

He is fun to watch because on some snaps he just overwhelms defenders. He likely be really good vs bigger DEs like DLaw but I think the Uber quick Von Miller / Micah Parsons might be impossible for him to handle on inside redirects.

Do the guys this big ever work out? Seems like just about every OT over 350 I can remember ended up a bust. We kinda salvaged Leonard Davis for a couple of years moving him to guard but eventually he lost the stamina to play effectively there!

Im always very skeptical of these massive athletic players long term outlook. There bodies tend to give out fast. Leonard Davis and Dontari Poe had the bodys of a 40 year old before they were 30. Micah Becton's body is already starting to break down

I certainly would take a look at an offensive linemen with a premium pick. The reason why I am such an advocate for Washington is because of his blocking ability. You literally can have 4 tackles on the field together at all times with Washington at tight end. Unlike most I don’t expect him to put up big stats because he would improve our offensive line substantially meaning a better Dak, better run game and passing game with just his ability to block.

As posted previously that he is a risky pick. Boom or bust type to some extent.

Having said that, Poe just let himself get completely out of shape. The non supervised offseason due to covid eliminated any chance for him to get into shape during camp.

Bigg (Leonard Davis was already 29 when he signed with the Cowboys. Team discipline was non existent during his time in Dallas with Wade Phillips as HC. I think he also let himself get completely out of shape.

Both Poe and Bigg looked very "fat". D. Jones does not look fat. His huge wingspan is an indicator that he has a huge frame.

Summary: The biggest risk is in the fact that there just aren't any good comparisons with him to other past/present NFL players.

Orlando Brown and Trent Brown are the two upside cases you're looking at when projecting Jones.

I highly doubt he makes it to our second round pick. Dude might even sneak into the first; talented big men always go early.

Looks like Schmitz, Torrence, Harrison, Wright, Jones are all fringe 1st round prospects. Maybe Avilia, but more likely Mauch/Bergeron who both need to get stronger, but many believe could play yr 1.

2nd round seems to be a better spot. Just take whoever falls. Cyrus, Avila, Schmitz, Mauch, Bergeron or Avila.

Don't see taking an lineman at 26, unless something unexpected happens. With Tyron returning and Steele eventually coming back, they aren't going to redshirt a 1st rd pick here. They could try to draft one on day 2, maybe more of a developmental guy on day 3 along with a low level fa signing.
