20 Questions: Which Linebacker Wins Competition For Starting “Sam” Position?
Tuesday, June 30, 2015 3:54 PM CDT
By DallasCowboys.com Report

Despite completing four weeks of OTAs and mini-camp practices, several things remain unsettled for the Cowboys. When the team reports to training camp on July 28 in Oxnard, Calif., several questions still need answers.

The staff writers at DallasCowboys.com – Rob Phillips, David Helman, Nick Eatman and Bryan Broaddus – will attempt to answer these questions before the start of training camp.

Today, the staff continues the series with an attempt to answer who wins the strong-side linebacker position.

19) Which Linebacker Wins Competition For Starting “Sam” Position?

Nick Eatman: Obviously this question would be higher on the list if this were a position that played a bigger role in the defense. Yes, a starting job is a starting job but this is really more of a two-down position considering the Sam linebacker comes off the field during nickel and dime packages. Because of that, I can see Kyle Wilber winning this spot, saving Anthony Hitchens more for the nickel. Plus, Hitchens to me, will end up playing more in the Mike. Wilber has a good role as the Sam and on special teams and this coaching staff likes his game and progress. So I would say it goes to Wilber, only because Hitchens will be used in other ways.

Bryan Broaddus: It might not be an ideal fit for this defense, but I believe that Anthony Hitchens will get the first crack at the job with Kyle Wilber, Keith Rivers and Andrew Gachkar working as the backups. The only reason that this might not happen is if there is something going on with Rolando McClainat the Mike. If McClain is not healthy enough to go then I think you will see Hitchens play there. Mike and Will are more natural positions for Hitchens due to his lack of length which is a concern with the coaching staff. If I had to handicap the position if Hitchens does move – Rivers would appear to be the next logical choice due to his experience at the position and from how I have seen the coaching staff use him during these practices leading up to training camp. Both Wilber and Gachkar are core special teamers and are better suited to continue in that role.

Rob Phillips: Anthony Hitchens has earned first crack at the Sam spot, in my opinion, with a chance to contribute at other positions as needed. He made a strong impression on the coaching staff last season by handling all three linebacker spots as an injury replacement. For a fourth-round pick viewed as a reach by many third-party observers, that’s a pretty good start to his career. The linebacker depth as it stands now looks improved. Jasper Brinkley (and Hitchens, too) is nice insurance for Rolando McClain in the middle, and 2015 fourth-round pick Damien Wilson might be Hitchens 2.0 – he has worked at the weak side behind Sean Lee but offers position flex. Hitchens has proven he can play any position. Just remember, whether it’s Hitchens, Kyle Wilber or Keith Rivers, the Sam linebacker is likely off the field on passing downs.

There's not much, if any, difference in an Otto and a Jack in a Bear front although I don't think they will run an Otto with two LBs on the strong side; at least often enough for it to be some new defense. I do think the fronts will be different. Most teams are running so many different fronts these days I can't tell from most TV shots what it is for sure. Do we play a lot of cover 3? I think we do play enough to be significant as Church is closer to the LOS albeit not like a Bear front. We play a fair amount of Leo but not as much as when Ware was here. Maybe with Gregory we will see more wide rushes. I think he can excel at that.

I don't see Wilbur as a 3 down Otto or Sam. I don't trust his coverage. But he could play 1st and 2nd downs if they had a decent chance of being a run down. I do think he can blitz well. Hope I'm wrong about his coverage ability.

Right now I have no good idea who the LBs will be or where they will play much less use of hybrid defensive schemes and fronts.

Wolfpack... that's a great point and I keep forgetting about the possibility of the "Otto" position... The Otto position makes predicting "who plays the SAM" harder than most traditional 4-3 schemes. Initially, I would have stated that Hitchens would definitely win the starting Sam position based on last years performance and the fact he played all three position admirably. And I still hesitantly believe he will ultimately secure the job by the end of training camp. Can you imagine where our defense would have been without him last year? After considering the Otto.. I might be thinking too far out the box, but I believe Marinelli is salivating at the thought of Randy Gregory playing the Otto..exp on obvious passing situations. Can y'all imagine a front of Lawrence, Crawford, Hardy, and Mincey.. with Lee, McClain, and Gregory? That's just SICK!...

Below I've listed all current Linebackers on the team including where I think they"ll end up... And I welcome the ridicule and criticism

Donnie Baggs- Practice Squad player with real potential after a redshirt year
Jasper Brinkley- back-up: Great pick-up and insurance if McClain dosen't get his head screwed on straight- I'd be fine with him starting bc of what Marinelli will get out of him
Andrew Gachkar- back-up: special teams ace that Charger fans were upset to see leave..says a lot ab what kind of player he is
Anthony Hitchens- Starting Sam/back-up WILL: we pick-up a gem with this guy and will only get better
Justin Jackson- Cut/ camp body
Cameron Lawerence- Like the player, but the comp is too much..cut
Sean Lee- Starting Will: fingers crossed he stays healthy bc he is as good as it gets when he's on the field
Rolando McClain- Starting Mike- A game changer, the presence needed in the Middle of Marinellis scheme- think Urlacher
Mark Nzeocha- PUP: another great McClay pick that I hope we can stash till next year
Keith Rivers- back-up/Otto: veteran player that could get cut if a younger player steps up
Kyle Wilber- Trade bait for 3-4: really had high hopes for this guy in the past, but unless injuries change things, he'll be gone
Damien Wilson- Back-up Will: Hitchens II.

Hey Jobber I thought long and hard about this and the best choice for starting -sam linebacker is Geoff Swaim. I know he is a tight end, but I see him as one of those throwback 2 way players who can make a difference on both sides of the ball.

Ridicule and sarcasm galore! :)

And humiliations galore as well.

Well they have him starting everywhere else so why not. :)

I think the FO has done what they said they wanted to do, provide good depth for the oft injuried LB group.

I also think you'll see the Otto used to bring a pas rush if needed. If the new front 4 can get home, then you'll see less of that role.

I really like the forward thinking here, you have to FO trying to cover the talent part while the coaching staff is looking to make scheme changes to correct a weak point of the 2014 season. Been a long time since we've seen both.

Hey Jobber, do you know where we can get our Geoff Swaim jerseys ?

Keep in mind that the person that started the Swaim humor said at this time last year that Hitchens was a wasted pick.
