Apparently They Give a Trophy for This One...
Posted by jellis at 8/21/2008 4:59 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

That's right, the winner of Friday's 7 p.m. game at Texas Stadium between the Cowboys and Texans wins "The Governor's Cup."

I'm told the Cowboys held an 18-13 advantage in Governor's Cup wins against the old Houston Oilers, who left for Tennessee in 1996. The Cowboys are 3-3 against the Texans since their inaugural season in 2002, and that's accounting for four preseason games and two in the regular season.

The talk around Dallas has long been that the Cowboys didn't care about the Governor's Cup, but that it was actually a big deal in Houston - people have always said the Oilers/Texans treat the game as their Super Bowl. I noticed a Cowboys beat writer polling players in the locker room earlier this week as to what the trophy at stake Friday is called, and the only one I heard answer correctly was center Andre Gurode.

Gurode, not surprisingly, grew up in Houston.

So, Cowboys fans, do you care if the Texans win this preseason game? What if the Cowboys won, but it means a starter has to miss a couple regular season games with, say, a stubbed toe... Is it even worth that much to you to beat the cross-state rivals?

Oh by the way... Forget the fact Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game. Teams he's coached are a dismal 2-4 in Governor's Cup games dating back to his first year as a defensive assistant for his father on those 'Love Ya Blue' Oilers. Off with his head!

Here's more on the Governor's Cup from a highly reliable source... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor%27s_Cup_(Texas)

Living in the Houston area I can back this statement up. When they beat us in the 1st regular season game a Texan fan actually told me that that was more important that a SB to him. Preseason or regular season it's their SB.

To me, that was the most humiliating loss in franchise history.

And I think that until the Texans make the playoffs, get a couple of playoff wins or even make the super bowl, they will always regard a Texans/Cowboys game as their super bowl.

They simply have not had much excitement in their short tenure so they find whatever they can to get excited. And thats fine with me.

Living in Houston area it sucked for me. We were a 5-11 team that year and the 2 years before. The Texans finished 4-12 that year. We were a bad team so it wasnt very humiliating for me. Just one bad team beating another.

I think the trophy they used to give out on thanksgiving is more important IDK if they still do it.

That Texans fan wouldn't have said that if he had ever felt the exilaration of his team actually winning a Super Bowl.

Actually I think that would make it worst.

I think the NFL is missing an opportunity to create a great rival with the Cowboys and Texans. I am supprised they don't have us playing the Texans in the regular season each year. I know there is a rotation with the AFC teams. But heck back in the 90's they always found a way for the Boy's to play San Fran.
