Opponents have often stubbornly moved a safety into the box against the Cowboys’ offense this season, which created a lot of single coverage for Miles Austin in the last three games. The result: five touchdown catches in that stretch.
For the first time since entering the starting lineup, though, Austin got plenty of extra attention from the Eagles.
“Early on they were rolling coverage to him,” tight end Jason Witten said. “I think they felt like if they can roll there and bring pressure, the ball’s going to have to come out (quickly)."
Tony Romo capitalized by hitting Roy Williams for a season-high five catches, and Witten worked underneath for a game-high seven catches. Finally in the fourth quarter, Romo was able to freeze the safety with a pump-fake and find Austin in stride for a 49-yard TD.
Witten was impressed with Austin’s composure despite having no catches through three-plus quarters.
“They still ran their defense, but Miles is going to see that (double coverage,” Witten said. “I thought Roy did a great job. Everybody did a great job of stepping up.”
