It's something the Cowboys are having to prepare for on a weekly basis now, the Wildcat offense. And this week's opponent, the Carolina Panthers, have shown they will use the new-old formation with running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.
Wade Phillips said the Cowboys studied each team's Wildcat looks, as well as other possible variations, during the spring and summer, and continue to update their scouting reports on the different formations each team has shown.
"We looked at all of last year's film and this year's film," Phillips said. "And we think we're prepared for what we do, but it takes time to work on those things also. And we also have it, so the other team has to work against us. It's just more time you spend in practice working on something different."
"It's something we studied in the off-season. We looked at every play that everybody ran, the teams that were running it, every play of the Wildcat stuff, and said 'Hey, we want to do these things against it if teams are doing it.' There's a lot of different forms of it, obviously, and who's back there. If Steve Smith's back there it's a lot different than other players."
It's looking like the Cowboys and other NFL teams will have to be prepared to see the Wildcat each and every week.
"It's going to be the thing this year in the league, obviously," Phillips said. "I think every team has some form of it, and everybody has to prepare for it."
