Keep An Eye On Texans’ Secondary
Posted by nickeatman at 8/21/2008 7:33 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

We all know that the importance of preseason games rarely extends to the other team. And Friday’s third exhibition game against Houston, the first at Texas Stadium this season, is really no exception.

But if you get a chance, it might be worth it to pay attention to the Texans’ defensive backfield, particularly in newly-acquired cornerback Jacques Reeves.

Yes, that same Jacques Reeves that many fans felt the need to throw under the bus for the Cowboys’ playoff exit last January against the Giants.

Clearly, the Cowboys have upgraded at cornerback this year, adding Pacman Jones and Mike Jenkins and even Orlando Scandrick.

But I always thought Reeves took way too much criticism, especially for someone who started 13 games on a 13-win season. If he was that much of a liability, then why couldn’t more teams do any damage.

Well, the Texans certainly liked enough of him to shell out and he’s currently starting for Houston while Dunta Robinson is out with an injury.

Reeves, never the most talkative player in the locker room, said this week from Houston that he expects “a lot of talking” on the field this week against his former teammates.

Reeves should get plenty of playing time in the first three quarters, but later in the game, check out safety Texans’ safety Dominique Barber, a rookie sixth-round pick out of Minnesota.

A Barber from Minnesota? Yes, Dominique is the younger brother of one Marion Barber. Maybe the Texans will let him in the game a little early to try and tackle his big bro.

Then again, by now, young Dominique should probably know better.

Should be fun.

And what was wrong with that?

If he was that good, why was he consistently someone who was attacked every game?

Any cornerback can be protected with a quality pass rush. But when that was not present, where was someone going to go? Right at the two weak links, Reeves and Roy Williams. And lo and behold, that is what New York did.

All season long we spent time adjusting and readjusting to protect Reeves. And it worked. He really is not that good. He's not the worst, but not a starting quality player. No shame in that, but the Texans overpaid.

The opinion of the Texans braintrust isn't something I would use to support an argument.

They actually cut Quinn Gray weeks into camp after signing him to a free agent contract also. If that isn't poor pro scouting at work, I don't know what is.

Texan fans are a delusional bunch of dirt bags. They rip the Cowboys every chance they get, have they even finished above .500? Or played in front of a building filled to capacity?

My favourite is when their fans thought the Jacques Reeves signing could be compared to Nate Clements or Asante Samuel. Get a grip, you'll always be option #5 in Texas when it comes to football.
