In just the third week of the regular season, it’s really too early to answer that question. Coming into season, it seemed more like a fact than an opinion that the NFC East was easily the toughest division in the NFL, from top to bottom.
Top, yes? The Giants are really good and maybe the best team in the NFC and appear to be in the top three or four in the entire league.
But the bottom is a lot further than we thought. I’m sure Cowboys fans got a real kick out of seeing the Commanders fall to the Lions, who ended their 19-game losing streak. And Washington wasn’t just bad today, but they limped through a 9-7 win over the Rams last week and are sitting at 1-2.
Now, before Cowboys fans get too excited about that, they might be right there with the Commanders if the defense doesn’t cover better this week and Tony Romo doesn’t bounce back with a much improved game.
Right now, it’s a little too early to figure out the Cowboys. Even watching the Giants-Bucs game from Sunday – a 24-0 blowout by New York – you can look at it two ways. For one, it’s not bad that the Cowboys put up 31 points on a Giants defense that came back with a shutout on the road.
Then again, the Cowboys gave up 21 points to a Tampa team that is not only 0-3 now, but couldn’t even get on the board at home.
As for Eagles, they’ve had three blowouts – winning two of them against the Chiefs and Panthers and were hammered at home against the Saints. Then again, without Donovan McNabb, it’s hard to evaluate the Eagles right now. But you know their defense is very good, and with that, you get the feeling Philadelphia will be right there in the mix.
So this great division that we thought would be tough from top to bottom may not be as great as we thought after all.
