Jerry Jones on Tuesday quickly dismissed questions about talks with Miles Austin's agent, David Dunn, over a contract extension for the breakout Pro Bowler.

The Cowboys protected the restricted free agent Austin with a first- and third-round tender, at $3.168 million for 2010. Both sides have said they would like to work out a long-term agreement at some point, but neither have really elaborated much.

"I'm not going to get into it," Jones said Tuesday. "I won't get into the detail on the contracts."

Gut feeling here is Austin has to wait until mid-season for a new deal. Yes, the Cowboys did extensions with Flozell Adams, Ken Hamlin, Marion Barber, Terence Newman and Terrell Owens during the summer of 2008, but those were more proven commodities.

Austin's situation is kind of reminscient of Tony Romo's back in 2007. The Cowboys waited until their bye week to lock him up, after a little more proof he was the franchise quarterback. With no CBA agreement in place for 2011 and beyond, the Cowboys hold all the cards in the Austin talks.

Expect a deal that will seem like a bargain by current open market standards.

Hopefully Austin is willing to do what Romo did and earn his contract. He was spectacular last year, just keep it up and you'll get paid man.

Noone will even consider giving a 1st and 3rd for him so it would be foolish to sign him to a big money deal at this point. If his demands were reasonable, sure sign him. If he wants top 10 WR money, then he would have to show me an offseason of hard work and another year top 10 production. They can always franchise him next year until a deal is done.

Obviously. He's not going anywhere.

Like Romo, Austin isnt a player thats looking for a mega bucks contract. He wants to get paid a little bit, and help the team win.

His contract will not be a huge deal, because he's not after money. He's after winning ballgames. Same with Demarcus.

We've done a great job of bringing in high character guys who want to win ball games.

This strikes me as an overconfident, almost arrogant approach and I hope that it's truly not the team's line of thinking.

They have no trouble throwing money down the hole that is Roy Williams and they're going to make the receiver who produced "prove it"?

Again, I hope this is simply misguided speculation and not actually what the team is thinking.

I like the approach. They'll get a fair deal for both sides done in due time. I'm not worried about Austin in the least.

Nobody's giving up a 1st and 3rd for Miles Austin. He'll make his tender money this year, and if around Week 8 or 9 he's still doing his thang out there, he'll be rewarded, a la Romo.

Money's no object when at any moment you can probably go out to dinner with Jerry Jones :D

I wonder if owners are able to buy gifts/birthday gifts for their players, or give out Christmas "bonuses"?
