Thursday's column spotlights the 2009 draft class and the importance of their development this year. One player in particular to watch this summer is outside linebacker Brandon Williams.

I asked Wade Phillips about Williams last May during the first week of OTA's. He was clearly excited about his pass rush ability and mentioned his quick first step. Like Victor Butler, though, there's more to outside 'backer than chasing the quarterback.

Williams' rookie season ended in preseason to a torn ACL. If he comes back stronger this year, this is a young player who can help spell DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. Butler, too.

Williams' return also deepens the position. Williams' injury and Greg Ellis' release thinned it out last year.

He has no potential whatsoever. Last year's draft was a colossal failure because it was focused only on Special Teams. None of these guys was ever envisioned as anything but a Special Teams player. It's true. I read it here. Several posters have proclaimed this. Shame on Rob Phillips for not knowing all hope is lost. [/sarcasm]

My line: "I'm picking up some sarcasm."
Hos's line: "Well you should because I'm layin it on pretty thick."

I know I am a pessimist, and I was pretty disappointed about last year's Bobbing for Apples, I mean Draft but even I was and still am very excited about Brandon Williams.

I think in the end the 2009 draft will produce a decent amount for the Boys.

We had the All NFL IR Rookie Squad last year, so maybe it's a little bit too early to start tootin' the horn. People are wanting to give Brewster a starting spot, and he hasn't even completed a training camp practice.

I like Brandon Williams ... liked him more than any of our other picks ... but he was pretty invisible in the preseason games even before the injury.

Hey Hos hammer this guy for hyperbole.

Not a single person has talked about starting Brewster.

It was a terrible draft class. The kicker was the best pick. That is all anyone needs to know.

I also am intrigued to see what Curtis Johnson can do after an off-season in the system. We have no shortage of potential pass-rushing outside linebackers, which is why I'd be surprised if we add another in the draft this year.

What if someone dissented sarcasm the way you do hyperbole- you know, just a pet peeve. Would you give a damn?

I once heard a preacher on some TV station my mom watches say sarcasm was immoral, so there are people out there like that.

Jason Williams with his 4.4 speed is also a very good pass rusher. Hodge as well. There is no dearth of natural young pass rushing talent on this team. They only lack experience, and size.

In fairness, though, he only played in part of one game before he got hurt, and IIRC that was only a few special teams plays.

(You knew I had to post in this thread.)

They are the reason I don't think it's necessary to draft an ILB, either, but I can understand if Dallas wants to add to the competition.

Outside we have three guys who intrigue, plus two fairly young starters. Inside we have two who intrigue, a likely nickel-only player and one of the starters doesn't have much time left.

If the Cowboys are going to draft an ILB, I hope they bring in a thumper who makes "oooh" hits. Cowboys already have enough guys w/speed and/or can cover in the middle. They need a beast who will bring a physical element, a much needed edge, to the position.

Yeah, Bat, I've thought that type player should've been here a while back. Those type guys can set a tone for a defense. While it may not happen, I would like to see Brandon Spikes out of Florida on this defense. Nasty enought to make those kind of plays, but able to play within a good scheme.
