Fullback Deon Anderson will miss Thursday's preseason contest with a knee injury. He's been in Dallas the last few days for further evaluation.
Wade Phillips said the team would have a better idea as to the extent of Anderson's injury when they returned from Oakland. Swelling in the knee first sidelined Anderson on Sunday.
Anderson missed two weeks after having arthroscopic surgery to clear loose cartilige from his left knee last September. Phillips said he didn't know whether Anderson's current issues were similar.
A sixth-round pick in 2007, the tough lead-blocker and and special teams standout Anderson has battled to stay on the field during his young career. He missed the second half of his rookie season after being placed on injured reserve with a torn rotator cuff.
With their starter down, the Cowboys will give a heavy dose to Julius Crossline and Asaph Schwapp on Thursday. Crosslin spent last season on the Cowboys' practice squad. Schwapp signed with the Cowboys in April after going undrafted out of Notre Dame.
The fullback position will have a decreased role on the offense this season because of the prevelance of two-tight end sets. Chances are the fullback sees more plays in the kicking game than from scrimmage.
Still, the Cowboys are hoping for good news on Anderson.
Safeties Exchange A Few Sideline Words

It doesn’t have to be hot for tempers to flare. Even practicing indoor can get things heated.
In the middle of Tuesday’s practice, safeties Ken Hamlin and Pat Watkins exchanged pleasantries and had to be separated by teammates and assistant defensive backs coach Brett Maxie. While the altercation didn’t seem to be a huge deal, it’s always something to keep an eye on make sure it doesn’t escalate.
Probably just one of those training camp things. It’s time to start hitting someone else.
