Local Prospects Arriving For Dallas Day

Posted by nickeatman at 4/13/2009 10:23 AM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

With the draft now less than two weeks away, the Cowboys should have a good idea at some of the top players who will be available. Now, they’re taking a closer look at some middle-round players to some possible undrafted free agents.

The Cowboys are holding their annual “Dallas Day” on Monday here at Valley Ranch, where they have invited several local prospects for a workout at the team’s facilities. These players either played college or high school football within a 100-mile radius of the complex.

However, the workout is still intended for lower-round players, meaning you won’t see players such as Matthew Stafford, Michael Crabtree or Jason Smith – all Dallas-area players, here at Valley Ranch.

But there are some big names on the invitee list, including a pair of quarterbacks – Missouri’s Chase Daniel and Sam Houston State’s Rhett Bomar, a former Oklahoma quarterback.

Other players who were invited include Texas DE Henry Melton, Texas Tech DE Brandon Williams, TCU running back Aaron Brown, Baylor wide receiver Thomas White and Oklahoma defensive back Lendy Holmes.

In the past, the Cowboys have found some players here at Dallas Day. In 2004, the club drafted both Patrick Crayton and Jacques Reeves in the seventh round. The Cowboys have also signed players such as Tyson Thompson and Daniel Polk, who were at Dallas Day as well.

Henry Melton is a interesting prospect.

He is a raw player but has a lot of athletic ability.

Anyone know anything about his work ethic?

I've heard he works hard, but has some character issues and was suspended for a run in with the law. He's athletic and underrated imo.

I hope someone gives casey fitzgerald a chance. I go to UNT and even after seeing so many losses, Fitzgerald would always make a play worth coming to the game. He isnt very big, but he works hard and can catch well.

Two interesting pass-rusher prospects take part in Dallas Day

Two pass-rushers who could potentially be late-round steals are reportedly working out at Valley Ranch today as part of the Cowboys' annual Dallas Day.

Texas Tech's Brandon Williams and Texas' Henry Melton are both college defensive ends in the 6-3, 260-pound range who will probably be converted to 3-4 outside linebackers in the pros.

Williams, an under-the-radar recruit from Fort Worth South Hills High, produced like an early-round pick for Tech last season. He led the Big 12 with 13 sacks as a junior and decided to declare for the draft when he got word he was projected as a third-round pick. His stock dropped when he ran a 4.95 40 at the combine.

Melton, a heralded recruit from Grapevine High, didn't do much to distinguish himself as a defensive end for the Longhorns. Melton arrived at UT as a running back and spent two seasons there, rushing for 10 touchdowns as a freshman for a national title team. He moved to DE before his junior season and didn't start until he was a senior, when he had four sacks. But he's a physical marvel who might have pushed his way into the draft with a spectacular pro day performance that included running the 40 in the 4.5 range.

Keep your eye on this guy in Dallas

Former Texas Tech defensive end Brandon Williams is at Valley Ranch Monday for a workout. He put up excellent numbers his junior season (13 sacks) and there's a good chance the Cowboys target him late in the draft.

Williams didn't feel like he was used properly in Tech's defense. Maybe Wade Phillips would have a better idea.

Wasn't Melton actually considered to be on par with Orakpo coming into the season?

I would love to see us get Melton. He is a high energy guy and a hard worker. If we could land Melton I would be all for trading Ellis and platooning the OLB spot opposite Ware with Spencer and Melton.

His biggest problem is he hasn't played the position all that long.

Hes still a work in progress.

Hes a beast though and without even looking at his workout numbers I imagine they are pretty good.

No.

Melton was considered a blue chip recruit coming out but wanted to be a ball carrier. He was never highly coveted as a DE though he has always been intriguing athletically.

I really think this guy could be a dymanite OLB if given a year on the practice squad to develop.

Henry Melton on the draft radar after impressive Pro Day

By Cedric Golden | Thursday, March 26, 2009, 11:22 AM

Former Texas defensive end Henry Melton may have done himself the most good after competing in every drill at Pro Timing Day Wednesday. He not only competed in every drill, he competed very well, something he needed as that other defensive end at Texas.

The 6-3, 269-pound Melton clocked in the 4.5 range in the 40-yard dash at the UT bubble, which immediately put him on the draft radar, considering the defensive end position is one where big and fast pass rushers are in high demand. His 40 time followed a vertical leap of 34 1/2 inches earlier in the day, which was better than wideout Quan Cosby’s best effort of 33 inches. Melton added a solid 23 repetitions in the 225-pound bench press.

On day when teammate Aaron Lewis was limited after he tweaked his hamstring, Melton did everything right, competing in every drill and improving his draft prospects in front of 60 NFL scouts. After registering 19 solo tackles and 4 sacks in his only season as a starter, Melton wasn’t thought to be a sure-fire draft prospect. That may have changed after Wednesday’s workout.

“(The scouts) got to see the awesome athleticism they didn’t know I had,” Melton said. “I feel pretty good about my performance. I did everything I could do out there.”

Melton’s uncle, former NFL defensive back Ray Crockett, believes Melton will be a steal in this draft if he is selected.

“He wanted him to show his athletic ability and he did,” Crockett said. “With him being a defensive starter for just one year, he had to adjust to a new position. He has already shown the capability to learn and adjust. With is ability, if a team puts him in the right position and nurtures him along, he can play in this league.”

The former super-sized tailback is hoping a team will call his name at next month’s NFL draft because as he so eloquently put it: “it’s better to get drafted than sign as a free agent because if you get drafted, that means they want you.”

Melton has private workouts scheduled with New England, Miami, and Chicago. The Dallas Cowboys have also reportedly shown some interest.

He also play some linebacker at UT didn't he? Or am I just thinking of Orakpo (who I know played some LB) here?
