Marcus Dixon Suffers Right Leg Injury
Posted by jellis at 8/18/2009 9:58 AM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Still hard to tell what exactly was injured or how severely, but defensive end Marcus Dixon just made his way to the locker room with head trainer Jim Maurer.

Dixon, who spent last season on the practice squad, had been fighting for a job as a backup in the Cowboys' 3-4 front. Coaches had mentioned his name as one of the most improved players of the off-season after he transformed his body, slimming down to a more athletic shape.

With the offense and defense running an 11-on-11 drill near the goal line, Dixon went down and remained on his stomach. He moved gingerly off the field with help from Maurer and a member of the team's equipment staff.

The 24-year-old had been running as the third-team left end.

Well, that sucks for him.

I doubt it is any sort of loss though judging by how he played in Oakland. He was manhandled.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Dixon was another one of those "potential" players (we have a ton of them at the bottom of this roster) and it is too bad if he's hurt.

If he is indeed injured for a significant time, hopefully this motivates the team to get out and sign a veteran for depth. We need someone who could play nose or end desperately if he's gone, unless of course we continue with this strange method of thinking our roster is 90% set and count this like an early cut like we appear to have done with some other roster openings.

The entire backup DL line was a big problem against Oakland. They didn't play the run or pass very well. As bad as OL has been in terms of hand-wringing, that performance by their defensive counterparts has me worried.

Yeah, these 'early cuts' have me confused as well.

I thought teams didn't need to start trimming for another two weeks?

I would have thought that the Cowboys would have signed some players to replace what they cut.

It's not like this team is loaded with quality depth.

That just may be the death knell for Marcus. I am pulling for him b/c of his story but he just doesn't look very good when he's played thus far. Not that he can't improve we just might not have room to carry him another year with the special team emphasis.

Our DL wasn't great by any means against Oakland, but the biggest problem we had against Oakland was our backup rookie LB's running themselves out of plays by being to agressive and tring to runaround blocks not take them on.

He was a bubble guy anyway. They really only need to carry six DL, he would have forced them to keep seven if he made the team. Bowen, Siavii, and Hatcher are the backups.

Don't know about that... he's a guy the staff likes so I could see him as a final cut and then put on the PS or, if the injury is the 8-10 week sort, possibly putting him on IR rather than trying an injury settlement.

But hey, props for using knell rather than "nail"

It's sad for Marcus because I think he had a chance to come on this year. As for more backups, no change right now. The Cowboys and Jerry Jones will not add any more players especially vets until week two of the regular season. They are not going to guarantee any more vet contracts and will probably wait till final cuts are made to see who is out there worth signing. I pretty much think the Cowboys have made their decisions on the final 53 and will be cutting dead weight for the next two weeks.

Actually, as I thought I was watching, Siavii wasn't as bad as was being advertised. BTB (one of their bloggers) did a great write up on both he and Doug Free (play-by-play). After reading that write up, I realized that my assesment (in MY mind) was correct - Siavii actually held up pretty good. However, the DE's after Spears and Igor did NOT. Too many time I remember the line forming a "V". unfortunately, the V wasn't pointing into the Raider's backfield. Siavii was the point of the V on most of those occasions, with Hatcher and Bown getting pushed 4-6 yards off the LOS, ESPECIALLY Hatcher.

They are the same guys we've had at backup for the past couple of years so no sense being worried about it. It also might just be a bad game especially accounting for the 1st team matchup and I wouldn't be surprised if the raiders game planned.

I agree that the backup LBs were the biggest issue with the 2nd team D. They were aggressive and they got exploited for it.

Defensive line coach Todd Grantham didn't know details about the injury, but did say that missing some time won't hurt Dixon's roster chances too much.

"You always look at a body of work," Grantham said. "He's been here for a while and we kind of see how he's progressing, so we always look at the body of work."

Marcus Dixon suffers strained groin

DE Marcus Dixon strained his groin during this morning's practice, when he had to be helped off the field.

Not sure how long Dixon will be sidelined, but that's a tough blow for a guy on the roster bubble.

Dixon, who spent last season on the practice squad, had worked his way into the mix for the 53-man roster. He reshaped his body in the last year under the tutelage of strength and conditioning coach Joe Juraszek and had been disruptive at times during training camp.

ie: We have no one behind him that can remotely play.
