Morning Practice Hits (8/10)
Posted by rphillips at 8/10/2009 1:44 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com
Some practice report leftovers from Monday's morning session inside the Alamodome:
*Rookie safety Michael Hamlin jumped to knock away a Stephen McGee pass intended for Willie Reid. Good coverage.
*Inside linebacker Keith Brooking had a would-be sack on Jon Kitna. The defense isn't tackling in practice. Wait until Thursday.
*Rookie DeAngelo Smith has been moved to corner due to injuries elsewhere, but also spotted him at second-team safety.
*Tashard Choice made a nice stutter-step move inside on Bradie James to catch a Kitna pass. James had a good practice, though, that included stopping Felix Jones at the line of scrimmage.
*Rookie Stephen Hodge rested. Right now the Cowboys are limiting him to one practice on two-a-days coming off his knee injury.

Watch Out For Gibbons On O-Line

Did anyone just say “who?”
Well, that’s understandable, but seriously, Ryan Gibbons might have an outside shot to make this team. The Cowboys think highly of him and it’s showing here in the last few days.
Now, he’s got a few things going for him. For starters, he’s bounced around the league for a few years and spent last season on the Cowboys’ practice squad, after two years of the practice squad for teams such as Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and Chicago.
But more than anything, Gibbons has some versatility. The Cowboys have him listed as a guard, where he’s worked mostly with the second-team. But when the team gives the day off to guys like Flozell and Colombo, we’ve seen Gibbons working at offensive tackle.
He’s got the size to play either spot, at 6-4, 310 pounds. In fact, during the OTAs and mini-camps this summer, the Cowboys were working Gibbons some at center.
Gibbons is a smart guy, versatile, tough and somewhat experienced. And now that Robert Brewster’s injury has forced Pat McQuistan to play more at guard, there could be an opening somewhere on the line. If it had to be filled today, I think Gibbons would have a shot to claim it.
Competition Heating Up For No. 5 Receiver

I had a good talk with Isaiah Stanback last week while he was dealing with his injury, and this afternoon I'll be positing a story about the No. 5 receiver picture, with a focus on Kevin Ogletree.
Most of the piece will be on Ogletree, and undrafted rookie from Virginia, because he's been the most consistently impressive of the guys competing there during this camp and back home at OTAs and mini-camp.
In some years the Cowboys have kept six receivers, and Slick Wade Phillips jested the other day the team would keep "between three and seven" this year. But five sounds more like it, because of the numbers crunch caused by keeping two kickers and three quarterbacks. And we're not sure there are six guys good enough.
Competing for the job are Stanback, Ogletree, seventh-round rookie Manny Johnson, undrafted Boise State product Julian Hawkins, 4th & Long winner Jesse Holley and a couple of darkhorses, Mike Jefferson and Willie Reid.
I'm blogging this from the press box, so of course Stanback and Holley just made terrific catches on back-to-back plays, right as I trumped up Ogletree.
