When asked after the game why the Cowboys hadn't been able to get to the quarterback, DeMarcus Ware said the Giants were running more max protections, leaving tight ends and back in to block.
That's something Ware has had to deal with before, but Bradie James, appearing on The Cowboys Hour with Patrick Crayton on Monday night, revealed the Giants were doing it a little differently. Because the Giants had so much success, James said the Cowboys know other teams will employ the same tactics.
"They are blocking our pass rush different now," James said. "It's a copycat league. And so with that being said, now we know how teams are trying to adjust to our scheme. It's no secret that we're going to get some sacks, it's just time for us to get them now, and the way that we do that is we go back, we watch film.
"Two guys are blocking DeMarcus Ware, he's never seen that. They're chipping him, and he's still beating them, but what teams are doing now, as quarterbacks they're just throwing up prayers and they're actually able to connect right now."
Offenses have long been helping the tackle Ware lined up across from by putting a back on his side, or a tight end, but there were a lot of occasions against the Giants that the tight end didn't merely get a shove in against Ware, but actually stayed in for a real double team with the tackle.
After the Cowboys showed so much progress in stopping the run from the first game to the second, it'll be important to make the same kind of strides in getting after Jake Delhomme on Monday. They'll have to know how to beat the protections the Giants used against them.
"That's different. We've never seen that before," James said. "So now we know. Now we have to make the adjustment, just like we made the adjustment stopping the run, we've got to make the adjustment in the passing game."
