Saints Have Owned the Fourth Quarter

The Saints aren’t exactly fast starters. They have scored 71 first-quarter points, though only 17 in the last six games. Opponents have actually outscored them, 85-71, in the first 15 minutes.
Where they’re deadly is the fourth quarter, where they’ve outscored their opponents 125-34.
The Cowboys have scored 43 points, including only four touchdowns, in the first quarter. But an early lead would prove beneficial on the road Saturday.
“I think it’s important if we’re playing whoever, it’s great to have a touchdown as your first drive,” wide receiver Miles Austin said. “We’re going to try to do that against the Saints; we’re going to try to do that against every team we play. Every game, we’re trying to score every time we get the ball.”

Has It Really Been 15 Years?

I know the Saints have dominated this series recently, but I was a little surprised it’s been 15 years since the Cowboys have beaten New Orleans. The Saints, right?

I know they look like an 11-man Pro Bowl squad here lately, but it’s still the Saints. And the Cowboys have lost five straight games against them and none since 1994.

However, that doesn’t seem that long ago. I can still remember Larry Allen chasing down Darion Conner after an interception. The best part of that play was how the ABC announcers just couldn’t get over LA fetching a linebacker. Not only that, but it saved a touchdown and Jim Everett-led Saints only managed a field goal.

Another part of that game was that the Cowboys needed two defensive touchdowns – interception returns by Tony Tolbert and Darrin Smith – to beat a struggling New Orleans squad, 24-16.

While New Orleans has won five straight games in this series, it brings the Cowboys’ all-time series record to 14-8 against the Saints.

Does any of this matter come Saturday night? Nope. But it does seem strange that the Cowboys haven’t won in New Orleans in 15 years. (And anytime I get to bring up Larry Allen’s remarkable play, I’m going to do it.)
