Some New Deep-Snapping Ability On Campus
Posted by mickshot at 5/1/2009 2:43 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com
Maybe this is happenstance, but the Cowboys have added two position players to their 80-man roster capable of deep snapping.
Should L.P. Ladouceur be worried, since his only job around here is deep snapping for punts and place kicks?
First, the Cowboys signed free-agent linebacker Matt Stewart this off-season, and the former Atlanta linebacker who hasn’t played in a couple of years was with the Falcons when Wade Phillips and new special teams coach Joe DeCamillis were there. They know he’s at least capable of becoming a backup deep snapper.
And we discovered out here on the first day of rookie mini-camp rookie free-agent Jamar Hunt, the tight end from UTEP, is a deep snapper. In fact, he said he deep snapped his entire college career.
After practice, Hunt was showing off his talents for DeCamillis, snapping for what would have been punts. The 26-year-old rookie was fired up about getting tips on the art from DeCamillis.
While Ladouceur, signed through 2012, might watch his back, these guys would only be threats to him if they can make the club at their respective positions, meaning the Cowboys could get more game-day snaps from their deep snapper than just on special teams. Finding a guy who can do two jobs might be the game-day roster trade out for carrying two kickers if fifth-round pick David Buehler is kept active as a kick-off specialist.
