Don’t be surprised to see the first-teamers on both offense and defense to play into the second half and maybe as much as three quarters of action Friday night against the Titans.
There’s a couple of reasons for this, starting off with the inaugural game in the new Cowboys Stadium. There’s going to be a ton of excitement and energy and it can be preseason or not, but the players will want to win this one. You know Jerry Jones wants his team to win, or at least put on a show.
Secondly, don’t forget this is Tennessee’s third preseason game. The Titans already played Buffalo in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, and then last week against Tampa Bay. So this being the third game for the Titans, they’re planning to use it as the regular dress rehearsal, a general standard around the NFL for the third preseason game.
Just before bolting out of the Alamodome on Friday, some of the Cowboys’ players were talking about the opportunity to play a full half, and maybe even three quarters Friday night against Tennessee.
After the final practice on Wednesday, head coach Wade Phillips didn’t announce how long the starters would go this Friday night, but he said earlier in the week the first-teamers would play “a lot” longer than they did last week in Oakland. Against the Raiders, both the first units on offense and defense played just two series, although a few starters on defense, including DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff, played in the dime defense throughout the entire first half.
If the starters indeed play more this week, don’t be surprised if they go back to just a series or two against San Francisco at home on Aug. 29, and there’s a greater than zero chance that many of the starters are held out completely for the preseason finale in Minnesota. Then again, if the Vikings try to get Brett Favre a few snaps that night, just maybe Tony Romo can have a few as well.
