Aside from his team’s overall success, Terence Newman’s personal goal is pretty simple: become the NFL’s best and most complete cornerback.
When healthy, he’s been considered among that elite class. One Pro Bowl selection (2007) doesn’t really do justice how well he’s performed over a six-year span. But injuries have cropped up the last two years – first a partially torn plantar fascia in ’07, then a sports hernia and the eventual corrective surgery in ’08 that sidelined him six games.
From 2003-06, Newman started all 64 games essentially injury-free. Entering this year’s camp, the 30-year-old feels like he’s headed for a healthy season once again.
“Last year for sure I didn’t have a year like I wanted,” he said. “I was injury-riddled, but right now my body feels the best that it’s felt in the last two, three years. I’m excited because this is the healthiest I’ve been in about two or three years.”
That’s great news for the Cowboys, and it’s critical he stays on the field. While the team has confidence in Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick, its cornerback inexperience isn’t the same without Anthony Henry and even (gulp) Pacman Jones.
