As we’ve mentioned in recent weeks, the Cowboys have had ongoing dialogue with DeMarcus Ware’s agent Pat Dye about a contract extension for the Pro Bowl linebacker. Team owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones have said there’s no real timetable, but both sides probably would like to have a deal done before training camp starts in late July.
In the meantime, Ware’s keeping his head down and moving forward, letting the negotiators handle that business. He said Tuesday he’s not concerned that the uncertainty of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement will prolong the discussions.
“I don’t worry about it at all,” said Ware, who has one year left on the rookie contract he signed in 2005. “To tell you the truth, as my father always says, I’ve saved my money from the first blessing that I had, so I’m not really worried about that right now.”
That’s a great attitude for your best defensive player to have, particularly since Ware has emerged as a team leader and the most experienced player at his position with Greg Ellis gone.
The Cowboys will start grooming both of their rookie outside linebackers, Brandon Williams and Victor Butler, next week once Butler officially graduates from Oregon State. Even though he’d like to have a new deal in place by now, Ware’s participation in these workouts sets the right example for those guys on how to go about their business.
