Points Allowed Is Real Defensive Stat
by nickeatman at 2/19/2010

If you flipped through the media guide and wondered how the Cowboys defense ranked in the last few years, it’s not going to look so much like this past year was a major improvement.

The Cowboys were ninth in total defense in 2007, eighth in 2008 and then ninth again last season.

To me, I’ve always thought that offensive and defensive rankings need to have more input included than just total yards allowed or gained. There’s obviously more to it than moving the ball. You know, points are actually pretty big, too.

That’s why defensive rankings can be rather misleading, especially last year. The stat that should stand out more is the fact the Cowboys ranked second in the NFL in point allowed, surrendering just 15.6 points per game. Ok, so I just checked last year, and the Cowboys were allowing only 16.25 points per game. Not a huge difference.

One stat is pretty significant is the amount of the games the Cowboys held an offense to virtually nothing. In five games this year, opponents scored seven points or less, including the two shutouts at the end of the season.

The Cowboys had just five games from 2004-08 when opponents scored only seven points or less before last season.

The problem with the ppg is that it ignores defensive and special teams touchdowns and drives where the opponent starts deep in scoring range. There needs to be some formula like yards allowed % points or something like that to figure this whole thing out.

I'd like to see who gave up more points than Dallas when the other team started inside their own 30.

In all of our losses we allowed 17 or more points.

Gotta take the good with the bad.

Yeah because the D was worn out since the O wasn't producing...

By the same measure, the Cowboys offense was middle of the pack.

I wish they would divide the scoring stats.........both for the team and opponent.....off scoring, def scoring, ST scoring. this way you get a complete breakdown as to how each phase is doing both offensively and defensively.

Also, points scored on possessions after turnovers would be a nice stat to know for both offense and defense, just to see how efficient both sides are after a forced possession change.

The defense is close to dominating. Although looking at the MN game you wouldn't think so.

It was just one of those games where everything fell off the wheel. Starting with the Oline, and it just went from there.

Holding a potent offense like Minny to 17 points for three full quarters is as good as it gets. The O lost that one...

Yep. Plenty of garbage yards are given up to kill the clock in a prevent D

TD's and FG's are a good measure too.
