News: DC: Cowboys Agree To Terms With Pro Bowl DE Greg Hardy

I have no doubts about that. We haven't see a player with his motor in a long time.

You just don't know.

Melton didn't meet expectations.

The Johnson kid the Buc's signed was released after signing a big FA contract.

There are no guarantees that Hardy will be the player he was two years ago. You just do not know.

My guess is they are expecting a 6-8 game suspension, which cuts the money in half.

Then, there's the franchise tag if they want to keep him, or they can extend him with a longer deal.

Wrong guess. Please read this thread before posting.

i' m not good with cap stuff, for the people that are, are we in Cap hell next year too? like if he tears it up will there be no way for us to even compete to sign him?

According to Over the Cap (http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/dallas-cowboys/), we are currently at $151,869,848 for this upcoming season. 2016 is currently projected to be $110,217,390, so we're good for next season.

Doesn't matter leverage or no leverage, it takes 2 sides to come to an agreement. Some team out there was going to get him, maybe not today or tomorrow, but they would've. Obviously it would've been nice to lock him longer term (wasn't going to happen at the terms we wanted) or to have team options or franchise options on him (this is really the only part that has me bummed).

But look at the alternative, you don't sign him to these terms (which happen to be very team friendly by the way even as a 1 year rental (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) some other team comes in and signs him to a 1 year deal. And even if its for less money because the market really dried up for him and they overplayed their hand, the end result is the Cowboys who are a Super Bowl contender miss out on an elite pass rusher, a position of need.

Even if he ends up walking and we get zilch for him, if this guy helps us win a SB who gives a flying ****? This league is about wins, and this move helps us do that and doesn't hurt us in the future. Big time win on this deal. The ONLY thing I'm truly upset with is no option to franchise him, but like I said earlier it takes 2 to tango, and Drew Rosenhaus is the best in the business for a reason.

Rejoice Cowboys fans, we're a lot better today than last week.

I'm confident. I didn't waste two days here all day and night not to be.:)
We aren't talking about a 30yo AP here.

Seriously?

That's what Schefter tweeted. $750,000 base salary with $11 million bonus if he makes the 53 man roster and another $2 million bonus if he gets a certain number of sacks. Plus there's a no tag clause. It's essentially a prove it deal. He can command much more per year but is playing on the relatively cheap for Dallas because every other team is scared to touch him. I'd love it if we signed him long term but I just don't see it happening with how cheap we've been. This is a 26 year old who is one of the best edge rushers in the league and has a reputation as a great teammate. If we're willing to make Dez a Cowboy for life, I don't see why we wouldn't make a guy like Hardy. But that's thinking too far into the future. I'm just happy to have him for this year.

I think as time goes by and more of the details emerge, people will begin to understand what a good deal this really is. At first I was like "One year !" But it really does make sense.
Also, look at the workout bonuses, and how big they are. Cowboys obviously want to get him in house and keep him under wraps as the season gets underway. I'm sure they have already discussed/outlined parameters for next year with Rossenhouse (sp) "if he does this, we will agree to this" type thing. If he gets a suspension, then tears it up and enjoys his time here - who knows ! That's a win, win for both sides.
Bottom line is - we are a better team today than we were yesterday, and for not a lot of money. And it allows us to go any number of ways in the draft which is a good thing. I'm a happy boy today ...

We should be fine.

To those of you complaining about the no franchise tag thing... I mean, would you really want to be in the same 1-year-at-a-time situation again next year? By the end of this season, we should know whether we want him locked up, or want him out. Screw the franchise tag, especially at DE prices.

Define significant. Mario Williams got $40m guaranteed a few years ago. I'm sure a 6 year $110m monstrosity like Watt would have gotten him to sign but I also think you would be nuts to give it to Hardy given his circumstances.

His agent is Drew Rosenhaus and you don't use him unless you are trying to maximize your earning potential.

3 years, $45M, $20M guaranteed feels about right, though obviously I'm pulling numbers out of thin air. Hardy might have been amenable, because it would have provided him a hefty chunk now (one that other teams likely would not have offered) with a chance to cash in again before hitting the age of 30. We take on risk, in return for which we get the guy locked up for what can reasonably be expected to be the balance of Romo's career (maybe he goes a bit longer (who knows?) but I wouldn't want to bet on it). If Romo goes down early, we're going to be awful for a few years anyway, but now we have a prized asset locked up at a nice price and can trade him away for draft picks that can accelerate the rebuild. Doing so will accelerate the cap hit, but do we really care in circumstances where we're relying on Weeden or Vaughan or some other JAG to lead the team?

Who can say whether such a deal was available. Maybe it wasn't. But that's the kind of deal I would have chased if I were the Cowboys FO.

Regardless of what he does next year, I doubt he'll be a Cowboy after this year. If he has an awful season, we'd most likely be happy to be done with him. And if he has an amazing season, he'll be the top free agent next year and you know how eager Dallas is to hand out $200 million contracts (they're not).

If he leaves in 2016, it will probably be for a big contract so look for a nice comp pick in 2017. I like the direction the FO took.

Melton had a serious injury, Hardy does not. Also, Hardy will be allowed to attend training camp and play in pre season games like Scandrick did last year.

1 year!? Glad he's a Cowboy but he's probably gone after this year regardless of how he plays. If he plays bad or less than we expected, we won't want to resign him. If he plays amazing, someone will outbid us for him because of this new direction the Cowboys are going with being so conservative with their money. Whatever... let's just hope it end up like the Darelle Revis situation with the Pats last season.

We paid major bucks for Romo and Smith just recently. Dallas is just working within the cap.

We've seen some of our avg players show out in contract year. Can you imagine Hardy in contract year? :omg:
