IRVING, Texas – For young players, the old adage in the NFL is clear: the more you can do, the better chance you have to stick around.

It’s a bit ironic, when you think about it: last year, Jameill Showers made the Cowboys’ practice squad, and eventually the active roster in Week 16, as a quarterback prospect who proved in preseason he could help on special teams, too.

Yet, as he enters his second season, the Cowboys recognize Showers needs to be a full-time quarterback if he’s going to have a legitimate chance to grow and compete at the NFL’s most challenging position.

Undrafted out of UTEP last year, Showers filled a utility role on the practice squad. He said he worked on special teams and took occasional quarterback reps on the scout team when the defense was facing a mobile quarterback in a given week.

This offseason, the Cowboys have moved him back into the quarterback room with Tony Romo, Kellen Moore and fourth-round draft pick Dak Prescott.

Great the more competition the better. Can't wait to see the QB battle in training camp and preseason

I agree. I want to see who emerges as the best backup. I know this will only upset some, but I hope that Romo comes back healthy and better than ever, but I would still love to see him have to really compete. Something tells me if we draft a QB high (1st round) that Romo would get even better. I think he really does hate to lose and that only makes our team better when no one feels safe. Then again I still miss Jimmy and he's not coming back...so moving along...LOL

It was just a little joke at the expense of our (obviously thin) QB depth. If you're excited, that's great. We all have to have something to look forward to.

Look I'm sorry it's just tired of so much negativity about everything. I say something positive I get attacked and not saying we can't talk negative but that's all I see lately.

These guys are young and we have no idea how they will do. Maybe they are trash maybe they are solid and maybe they become starters. Let's give them that chance first.

Just imagine what people thought about Romo before he got his chance

The same people who were in charge of that search are in charge of this one. There's no Bill Parcells around anymore.

Prescott, Moore, Showers.... I'm oozing with confidence that they've got this.

Yes the same people that were in charge when Romo was signed. Bill Parcells had his share of draft mishaps too. Passing on SJax for a trade down and Julius Jones was a colossal mistake. He missed plenty. Ware would have never been a Cowboys had Parcells got his way.

Have you not seen changes in philosophy these last few years? Did we not begin to build from the trenches out and exercise some financial responsibility? Is it not possible they have learned from thier mistakes?

You would have traded multiple first round picks to move up for Wentz? Thats an awful strategy. These are the same "people" that were linked to Russell Wilson, Andy Dalton, and I believe Derek Car. We were close to Lynch, it didnt happen. They like Dak, he may well be a good player for us.

Showers may not be an NFL caliber QB- but please understand there are only 90 people at any given time on the planet who are. He made it through one season with an NFL franchise- let's let him take his shot without disparaging his accomplishments to date please.

I think it is a better bkup qb situtation than last year, showers in his 2nd year, and being included is good,
kellen wasnt here till sept of 2015, so last year he had no ota, TC or preseason.
And prescott is new so has a lot to learn, but is a mobile qb.
I think those 3 are better than some veteran, who isnt that good and not mobile.
Last year cassel and weedon just were not mobile, and for veterans, showed very little.

Cassel showed some mobility actually. His biggest problem was boneheaded plays. I don't know what the heck caused that wounded duck of a throw that was intercepted. I don't even remember which game it was in, but it was about the worst QB moment in Cowboys history that I can remember.

You and I had as much to do with Romo here than Jerry and Stephen, Rowdy.

Do you really want to review the career of the great Bill Parcells and his talent acquisition and the bum careers of Jerry and his fat born son? There's a reason why Bill had to come in here in 2003 and clean up the laughing stock of a mess those two idiots had this team in. There's a reason why he left a playoff contender. The bottom line is no Parcells means no Romo. Jerry couldn't find a Romo in two lifetimes.

Oh, and I know you threw that out there hoping I was dumb enough to just go along with it, but show me where Bill was against Ware in Dallas. I know the real story and I know the twist you put on it, but I'm interested in seeing your fantasy you call an explanation.

Have you not seen changes in philosophy these last few years

No. I see the same bum owner and incompetent son pretending they are personnel men while the underlings get shuffled. Same vision-less, reactive front office without a plan.

That's the same thing as 1994.

Did we not begin to build from the trenches out and exercise some financial responsibility? Is it not possible they have learned from thier mistakes?

If they learned from their mistakes they would immediately step down from those positions. They aren't qualified. Aren't skilled. Have done enough to be fired 10 times over. If they were truly this voice of reason and much wiser from the experience they would no longer handcuff their own team by operating without a GM or a VP of Personnel.

When they do that they've learned. Until then it's more of the same with the occasional new wrapping on this gift.

I would have traded what I would have to trade to acquire the franchise QB and I'm not really concerned what a blue and silver face has to say about it after the fact. I'll trade Elliott, Smith, Collins, Tapper, Prescott and next year's 1st for the franchise QB. He means that much. Those other players are that irrelevant without one.

I don't think you want to review my track record in the draft and the abortion that is Dallas.

Who cares who a team is linked to? Teams are "linked" to a slew of prospects during the draft process. They talk to everyone. Is this your first go at it? This is the new benchmark for acceptance in Dallas? No, we didn't draft him...but remember how we interviewed him one time? Go Cowboys.

The bottom line is this team has been woefully mismanaged since March of 1994 and it remains so today. Just with different supporting actors. Jason Garrett is the new Chan Gailey. Will McClay is the new Tom Ciskowski. Nothing has changed but the date on the calendar.

So other than the things you mentioned above, your pretty happy with the team, right?
