Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Charles Haley joined The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley on KESN-FM 103.3 on Tuesday to talk all things football. Here are some highlights from the interview:
On what it was like when he was first contacted about the news he had been voted into the NFL Hall of Fame:
Haley: “It was awesome and when I went to the door I thought it was another one of those knocks on the door where you had to sign some papers to walk across the street to sit there and everyone pats you on the head and says, ‘man you should have been in.’ Well, when I opened up the door, there was no more patting. It was ll handshakes and congratulations. I was so happy and I’m still happy. Nothing nobody can ever deflate the way I feel now.”
On the first time he met Cowboys draft pick Randy Gregory:
Haley: “I went to the draft and I drafted the 49ers’ second-round draft pick … He was in the back so went the second day so him and his family were there. They were the only ones there. Maybe one or two others. Man it was very depressing. So I went over, I said, ‘man you know what, you’re going to get into the NFL, and it don’t matter what round you get into. If you perform, you’re going to make the money. You’re going to make the money.’ It’s all about performance answer, it don’t matter what round you get into.”
On if Haley was more nurturing to Gregory than others, like Irvin might have been:
Haley: “As I tell people, if you talk for over five minutes, guys are thinking about something else. So I’m to the point, I’m straight to the point. I let the guy know first, he’s wearing my number; he’s wearing my number and the people who wear 94 man up and they play great. Second thing is you made a mistake, it’s over, not talk about it anymore. Third thing is what are you going to do to be great? How are you going to help the Dallas Cowboys? And you cannot help the Dallas Cowboys if you’re suspended. And I told him it’s time for him to grow up and be a man. And it’s a tough thing for y’all youngsters, but you need to try. And I told him I would be there for him.”
