IRVING, Texas – Rico Gathers just completed a standout career at Baylor – as a power forward.
Now he’s getting the opportunity to start a pro football career with the Cowboys.
With four draft picks in the sixth round, including three compensatory picks, the Cowboys drafted two defensive back prospects and two offensive skill players. Most notably is Gathers, whom outside draft observers have projected as a tight end.
The Cowboys’ first sixth-round selection (No. 189) was Purdue cornerback Anthony Brown, a three-year starter who had four career interceptions for the Boilermakers, all last year as a senior. Brown (5-11, 192) added 20 pass breakups over the last two years. He ran a 4.35 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, according to NFL.com. He’ll compete for a backup spot behind veterans Orlando Scandrick, Brandon Carr andMorris Claiborne.
With pick No. 212 the Cowboys selected Central Michigan safety Kavon Frazier (6-0, 217), a 26-game starter over four seasons who produced 108 tackles as a senior.
Four picks later (No. 216 and 217), the team drafted back-to-back offensive prospects: Eastern Michigan running backDarius Jackson and Gathers, who declared for the draft with intentions to play football for the first time since junior high school.
Gathers (6-8, 273) reportedly ran a 4.75 in the 40-yard dash at his recent Pro Day. Jackson (6-0, 221) became a full-time starter in his senior season at Eastern Michigan and ran for 1,089 yards with a single-season school-record 16 touchdowns.
