Hawk, I humbly disagree that no QB entered the league as an already elite QB.
I can only think of one, so your is very largely, mostly true. (I hope that made sense... lol)
The one QB exception to your valid point is... Dan Marino.
-He was 7-2 as a rookie. 20 tds 6 ints. Back in those days, only 6 picks was unheard-of for a rookie starter.
-His second season, he shattered the record books. 5084 yards passiing and 48 tds. (I don't even have to look those up... lol)
He finished that season losing to Montana's 49ers in the SB after posting a 14-2 record.
-His third season, he beat the '85 Bears... handing them their only defeat. Marino's Dolphins finished 12-4.
I hope you agree that Dan Marino was the exception to the rule.
Either way, thanks for jogging some memories. I was a big fan of Marino in the '80s.
It was something to see Don Shula go from the head coach who's QB once threw 6 passes in an entire game
to coaching a guy that threw for over 5000 in a season and held all the passing records when he retired.
Thanks again.
Good post!
LOL .....notice my words. No QB has come into league AS A PROVEN ELITE QB FROM DAY ONE. My point was that status is earned only by showing no NFL team/defensive coordinator can stop you from consistently winning coz of high playing level through tough games. Bottom line, many comes in with potential or profile of greatness but they'll only get the official status by proving it. That generally means teams feel he has the ability, physically and more importantly, mentally to play at a level higher enough to for the postseason.
I love your example of Marino. I said many times in the past, he's the only QB, other than Brady who could consistently carry an entire offense with average talent. His combination of release, decision making, and accuracy as a whole were best I've ever seen. He made the so-called Mark Bros. However, even as good as he was, it took him at least two years to prove he was truly elite or the real deal.
BTW......Notice the thread title of mindset and Kitna comments. Otherwords, mindset, draft status, NFL or college stats alone won't make you elite. Players still have to prove it consistently playing at an NFL level.
