Mailbag: Best Rookies In Camp So Far? Jameill Showers’ Progress?

YORK, SC
Who's having the best camp out of our draft picks and who's having the best camp out of our undrafted free agents?

Rob: For as much as they’re asking Byron Jones to do, he’s been the most impressive. He’s been in the dime package, he’s been a cornerback and he’s been at safety. So far he hasn’t looked overloaded. I like what Lucky Whitehead has shown as a receiver, and we’ll get a better idea of his return ability in preseason games. La’el Collins has looked progressively more comfortable at left guard, too.

David: It’s hard to definitively gauge Randy Gregory’s production, considering he’s not allowed to touch the Cowboys’ quarterbacks. Through two weeks, though, I’d say the early reviews are incredibly positive, as his quickness continues to give tackles problems. Lucky Whitehead is an easy choice to make, but I’m going to lend some support to Gus Johnson. I still don’t like Johnson’s odds to make the team, but this upcoming preseason game is going to be an amazing chance for him to make his case for a roster or practice squad spot.

I have not heard much about Jameill Showers, the UTEP quarterback that Dallas signed as an undrafted rookie. I figured that he was signed to be an extra arm since he came from an offense that utilized the read-option offense. How has he looked during training camp?

Rob: We haven’t seen him get many quarterback reps until a couple days ago. He’s got a very good arm and he’s mobile. The most impressive thing about him so far is his diligence: He’s being asked to handle special teams responsibilities, very unusual for a quarterback, and he’s done well learning two playbooks.

David: I feel pretty good about Showers’ prospects, but I’m not sure if that’s a result of his success or Dustin Vaughan’s struggles. Hopefully both quarterbacks will get some extensive playing time on Thursday night – if it were up to me, Tony Romo wouldn’t play at all. If they both get some live reps to show their stuff, I won’t be surprised if Showers takes advantage.
