Mailbag: Best Route For Developing A QB? How To Address RB Spot?

With some of the younger backups around that show some promise do you see the Cowboys going after them like A.J. McCaron, Zach Mettenberger, Blaine Gabbert and others like that?

Bryan: It‘s always interesting to see those types of guys develop after they get drafted. As much as I would like to say take a run at the group you mentioned, I am more likely to roll with Kellen Moore and then select one of these kids in this 2016 draft for the future. With that fourth overall selection you are going to have a chance to do some good if things fall right. You will also have the luxury of high selections in the other rounds to help as well so that is the route I would take. On the other hand, the front office might like your approach better – we will soon see.

David: I feel incredibly confident saying that the Cowboys are going to put a lot of resources into this position in the spring. I think they’re going to sign a veteran free agent – be it Kellen Moore or someone from outside the organization – and I also think they’ll draft a developmental prospect. This team can’t get away with carrying just two quarterbacks any more.

We have pretty decent running backs, but do you think the Cowboys will have any interest in drafting Derrick Henry now that he has declared to enter the draft?

Bryan: When the dust settles, I really wonder where Derrick Henry is going to fall in this draft? I am a bigger fan of other running back that can do more than what Henry might be able to give me. The Alabama running back has been drafted highly in recent years with mixed results so that is a thought that crosses your mind when putting your board together. What I worry about Henry is with his size and lack of quickness is he going to struggle when plays are not blocked perfectly? Even as good as this Dallas offensive line has been, if backs do not have the ability to avoid – there are problems in the running game.

David: It’s funny, because Darren McFadden obviously had a phenomenal season – but there’s little in the way of depth behind him. Rod Smith is under contract, but he had just two carries for five yards all year. Lance Dunbar and Robert Turbin are free agents. Again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cowboys sign a free agent as well as a draft pick at running back. Whether that’s Derrick Henry is hard to say. I assume he’ll be a second or third-round pick.

I don't know, maybe Goff or Lynch?

What I find utterly AMAZING is this:
I just don't see clamouring for these 2 in any other year. Goff maybe had some fanfare.... But I just don't understand all the sudden love & hype?

Suddenly 1 of these 2 have been anointed the savior, just because their there.....

I just don't get it..... Many other years, say last for example... Neither of these 2 wouldn't even be considered at our spot

These 2 QBs are rated in the the top 10 for a reason. Not just because they are the top 2 QBs in the draft.
And who is saying they would not have been considered at 4th pick last year. I haven't seen this said anywhere, other than from the self proclaimed experts on here. And yeah, the same ones that would gut this team every year, and switch coaches every other day.
I think I will go by what draft sites and ESPN and NFLN are saying. they may hate the Cowboys but that doesn't mean they are wrong about prospects.

Draft a developmental prospect at QB:huh:

How about drafting somebody that is already pretty good, like, I don't know, maybe Goff or Lynch?

Yea, crazy idea.

I'd draft one this year...and if they don't pan out try again in 2018...Point being get one in here and protect them with a good OL and a few good WRs that can stretch the field.

Why is it there is this mythical perfect draft that for some reason these players just don't fit into?

This is this draft. It is not going to change.

"In many other years" is a completely irrelevant term. At this moment, we are to picking one of the five best players in this draft. It is the situation we are in and it is unusual.

But let's just say Player X would not have been a top 10 choice in the XYZ draft? Makes no sense.

There are certain positions that historically lend well to "value" at certain spots. But that speaks nothing to the case at hand.

So, a #4 pick to sit bench is acceptable? With holes bleeding on D?

Makes perfect sense....

If it means getting the next Claiborne versus a competent heir to Romo, you bet it does.

No. None of the qb prospects are so surefire that we waste a #4 on them. Go best defensive player in the 1st either Treadwell to pair with Dez and get a competent qb in the 2nd or 3rd

I keep hearing the "best defensive player" but nobody says who.

Who is the special player, that is, hands down, the best value pick there?

Never see a lot of strong cases made, just assumptions that the unicorn is there at four, we just have to pick it.

You are even willing to pair a second WR with Bryant rather than a QB. Why?

Why not a RB like Elliott?

I just think a lot of people are buying into this silly idea that Romo has five years left.

And the dismissal of the idea of a QB at 4 is purely a defense mechanism.

there was no bigger hole then the back up QB last year
and it lost us how many games? This #4 pick can not
only be the back up next year he can become the starter
for the future . thats good savings

Exactly. Don't waste a top 5 pick on these non-special qbs that are gonna sit on the bench

non-special ? I hear differently but we'll see as the off season goes through its work outs
the senior bowl will be revealing

If bosa is there then him hands down. Or either jalyn Smith would be a good pick there too. We have high picks in each round so if we desperately want a qb we can pick up one early on day 2. And yes we saw how horrid our wr corps was when Dez got hurt so I would love Treadwell there. It would be like circa 2011 falcons with roddy white and Julio jones

And hell no not a rb at 4 that's way too high with rb being deep this year. McFadden put in work this season so rb is nowhere near dire

Jaylen Smith at four?

I don't have any reason to acknowledge anything else you say if you are that clueless and out of touch.

Good day, sir.

Rather pick up a day 2 qb since they won't be starting for a few years

there are certainly two schools of thought on the QB selection
however the history indicates there is some likely hood that the back up
will play sometimes and not just sit on the bench the first two years
even worse the next big hit could end Romo's season again
Im going now while we're selecting high

Your reasoning is that no QB because they will sit on the bench and then say lets get Smith?
