Mailbag: Do Any P. Squad Players Have ‘14 Potential?

After Ron Leary was able to go from practice squad to starter last year, do you see anybody making a big contribution from the practice squad this year?

Rowan: No one jumps off to me as an obvious candidate like Leary was last year. A popular name will be Caesar Rayford, who had a tremendously productive preseason in Indianapolis but didn’t build on it during the regular season in Dallas the way many had hoped. If he regains that previous form, he could develop into a contributor. Darrion Weems never got any action last season, finding himself consistently on the inactives list, but a strong offseason for him could have him competing for a starting spot. But none of the practice squad players seem poised to make as big a contribution as Leary did.

David: I remember having this conversation during the final month of the season: considering all the injury and upheaval on the Cowboys’ roster last year, it seemed impressive that offensive tackleJohn Wetzel was able to hold a practice squad spot for roughly six weeks. The Cowboys signed Wetzel, an undrafted rookie from Boston College, during the bye week, and he held onto that spot despite never suiting up. That seems like some kind of endorsement of his ability. Unfortunately for him, the tackle spot looks settled for the time being.

At what point do the Cowboys place higher value on trading down than whatever players are left at pick No. 16 or 17?

Tim Benford been on PS past few years. Seems to make a little noise in TC, but yet never quite makes it. If they don't pick up a WR in FA or the draft, this could be his year to make it. But probably will not make a huge contribution right away. But I see a FA or draft pick, therefore pushing him out again.
I think a few nagging injuries held him back though too.

Bedford was very raw, he needed the time on the PS. He does seem like a guy that could make the team if there was an injury to Beasley or Harris, but more likely ends up a late cut in camp that signs elsewhere.

The blurb on OT Weems in that article is the real news IMO, he was inactive for every game and you didn't get any sense of his progress but this article sounds like he is capable of being a solid backup next year (or the swing tackle if Parnell starts, then they cut Free for cap savings).

Yes. That is funny. But if the extra pick turns out to be Jason Witten Version 2.0, is the joke just as funny?

I was thinkin QB as a burner pick but the devil told me to say TE. Nice to see someone got that. Verdict. I dont think theres a wrong position this team can pick.

I'm interested to see some of them in training camp.

Jabara Williams (LB) has very good measureables with a terrific 10 yard time.
Tristan Okpalaugo (OLB/DE) has freakish arm length.
Quinton Spears (OLB/DE) looks good in game footage.
Jamar Newsome (WR) has decent measurables.

because they happen every draft. yes its still funny. the field against it being a Jason Witten 2.0 is very likely.
