Mailbag: Impressions Of Dustin Vaughan And La'el Collins?

Do you think with some continued success that we could finally see Vaughan move into the No. 2 spot?

Bryan: Good start for Vaughan – if you do see the continued success then the question does become how comfortable are you with him as your backup. In my mind I have said that I wouldn’t make any decisions on the future of Dustin Vaughan until I saw him play in all the preseason games, then at that time I would make that call. My hope is that he does play well enough to be the No. 2 here.

David: After watching him play well in live action, I’m at least intrigued to see what Vaughan can offer through the rest of this camp. His play against the Chargers was definitively better than anything we’ve seen out of him at practice. It’s going to take more than that for him to unseat Brandon Weeden, but it’s a solid start for him to build on heading into the second game.

In our preseason opener versus San Diego it appeared as though La'el Collins played very well throughout the game. There were a few plays where his technique was sloppy and he ended up on the ground. However, I felt that he held up very well in pass protection and did a great job at getting to the second level in the run game. I know that Ron Leary has played well, but with Collins' athleticism and upside, how soon can we expect to see him taking snaps with the ones?

Bryan: You are a little late to the party sir – Collins has been taking snaps with the first offense as of last week and like his game last night there has been some good with the bad. He has going to have to be more consistent if he is going to take this job away from Leary.

David: I really like the words “athleticism and upside” to describe Collins’ game. You can tell that he’s got the potential to become much more than what he is right now. I still think I might give the nod to Leary, because he’s a more experienced and polished player, but it’ll be interesting to see how much the rookie can push him as camp continues. There’s no denying he looked impressive.

I hear the coaches like Weeden and I'm just guessing that's more Garrett than anyone. No knowledge of that just a SWAG.

I liked what I saw of Vaughn and while raw I really like Showers.

Some interesting drama at QB this year with some actual players.

Showers is the same age as Vaughn. He's not a Weeden-aged rookie, but he's not as young as I'd hoped.

I'm not seeing what the coaches see in Weeden. At some point he has to produce in games or he just isn't any good.

Weeden was garbage. For a backup he gets a ton of reps and has not shown anything that tells us he can play if Romo goes down.

Perhaps Weeden does better at camp in practice than he does in live action. I think it's why he's been receiving praise for his perceived progress. Either that or his perceived progress is no more than wishful thinking. In live action, he fares differently than in practice. The pressures of the game rattle him at times. I'm sorry to say it's something that routinely proves disastrous.

Dustin Vaughn should be farther along at this stage than he is, imho. Vaughn's feel for the pass rush is almost non-existent. Even if he's lucky enough to sense it occasionally, his inability to scramble frequently betrays him. He's also very reluctant to throw downfield, opting instead to throw checkoffs, dinks and dunks. It's been said by many that his downfield vision is sorely lacking as well. I'm just not encouraged with his progress at this stage.

Showers appears to have a bit more promise at this point in time as compared to what Vaughn has done in the past. Whatever might come to pass with regards to our QB situation, I think the Cowboys had better hope for good health to be Romo's closest friend throughout 2015.

That's a little misleading. A lot of the guys that got significant playing time in the preseason game were getting mixed in with the 1s last week.

I felt the exact opposite. Weedon looked sharp in the game. Vaughan is only in his second preseason -- compare this to Romo's 2004 preseason. Romo made a huge jump from 2004 to 2005, and this Vaughan looked better than the 2004 preseason Romo, so it's not like Vaughan is behind the curve. Also, Vaughan evaded the rush nicely despite it being constant and overwhelming, and threw downfield constantly in the game. Not sure we even watched the same game.

It's amazing, well maybe not. That there are so many varied opinions on Weeden, as well for many other players, like Mo, or RB's. Many repeat or take what we see and read and form our own opinions from personal preferences. It's natural in life. When the coaches know best. We even get reporters saying and acting like us non experts. Even the posters that do study film and have coached or whatever, have varying opinions. One guy says Weeden looked fine, others say he sucked.

Let's face it, it really come to personal preferences and based on the knowledge we have, however we gained that knowledge. And also many opinions are given / formed by people wanting be on the 'in' crowd and majority, so go along with the ride, or they want to be the contrarian and go against the wind. I myself am usually on the contrarian side. Someone says Mo sucks, I say he isn't as bad as most think, but I actually believe that, as opposed to be a contrarian. But then again, I am no expert, but have gained some knowledge in my lifetime. Though I don't break down film either. But I won't be convinced based on film. It's like stats, it be made to prove or disprove ones point. Manipulated. Show all bad plays, or show all good plays. Like talking about all ones winning stock picks, but never about their losing ones.

This is not intended to any one or reporter, just a Saturday morning pre coffee start to the day......rant /

I thought for Vaughn to be worth a roster spot he needed to show growth from last year. It's one game but I think so far he looks to have improved
My unrealistic dream was he could take over the 2 but in reality I think that's another year away
I do think by next year if he can't push for the 2 then it may be time to move on
We still have lots of games to see and he still needs to improve but I thought he played well

Wade Wilson said back around OTAs that he believe Weeden to be the most improved player on the team. I don't know how Garrett feels about it, but he likely leans towards the incumbent backup (Weeden).

Collins was with the 1s because Leary was out of practice with back spasms.

They love Weeden...as a backup. They hope he never has to see the field as a starter.

ok heres my thoughts right now. I can accept Weeden as the back up, good quality back up. This is where the Cowboys waste time. If you really feel Vaughn cant do it, release him and start finding the heir apperant, Weeden is not that guy. Thats it, you either accept Vaughn has something and you get him on the field when you can (like they did with Romo) or you accept he doesnt have it and you get the next guy. This cant be Aikman part 2. There is no excuse for this by next year. Weeden is not giving you years and frankly id ratehr Vaughn be the profesional back up until hes replaced. Im assuming this year is a wash, i dont think Vaughn can supplant Weeden. I think we need Weeden more when Romo goes down. That being the case, we giht as well keep all 3 and next year use Vaughn as back up and start searching for the next QB.

During the Cowboys feed of the San Diego game, Babe Laufenberg mentioned that Dustin Vaughan rested his arm for a month before training camp started due to fear it would go dead from overuse the way it did last year.

Babe thought that was a horrible idea and played a role in Vaughan not having a good start to training camp.
