Mailbag: Reasoning For Releasing Terrance Mitchell? Jaylon Smith Update?

COLLIN CLARK
TRENTON, TX

I think it's interesting that the Cowboys released Terrance Mitchell. I read that Anthony Brown was getting first team reps, so is it safe to assume they feel they've found something special in Brown and Mitchell was just the odd man out... or was there something going on with Mitchell that we just don't know about?

Bryan: There are several corners getting an opportunity to play in the nickel role, so I wouldn’t read too much into that. As far as Mitchell, they tried him at a couple of different spots and it just wasn’t going the right direction. Remember that there is a new coach in charge of the cornerbacks – so just keep that in mind when we see the makeup of this secondary going forward.

David: At this point in the game, I don’t think it’s even safe to assume that the decision to cut Mitchell means anything about Anthony Brown. It was a bit of a surprising move, but the Cowboys thought they could improve the position another way. Mitchell played well in a limited opportunity last year, but he was no given to make the 53-man roster. I expect they’ll sign a couple more corners from elsewhere to try to improve the depth. It’s a pretty typical decision that happens every summer.

They can go 2 different ways with Jaylon's recovery on giving any news.
If he is making progress, and the nerve is firing, do they tell us this, or do they keep it from us. I feel they will just say he is coming along fine, and making progress type news. Or something like...he is training and doing conditioning work and is coming along in the normal rehab plan. They are following a plan and taking it slow as to not have any set backs.

They will give nothing to get hopes up, nor to give reasons for people to complain he is not progressing. As neither does any good right now.
I think we will see him and get the news after the nerve fires up, and stays that way. We are a good month away before the normal time line gets here for the nerve to have repaired itself enough to know anything. But a little bit a news that he is still even doing sideline work is good.

I would expect Jaylon will be tweeting any progress like toe wiggling.

Years ago a nerve in my pinky and ring finger and wrist was going dead. To the point I couldn't even write with a pen. I had surgery to release the impingement in my elbow, and low-and-behold the nerve grew back slowly. Fully functional now but it took a year. Jaylon's isn't nearly as bad as mine, so hopefully it will grow back faster.

Sounds like a bad case of CBTS. I get numbing in both hands on the ring and pinky if I do not sleep ith my arms straight. Rather annoying.
