QB Situation Looms Large As Cowboys Begin Evaluations At NFL Combine

INDIANAPOLIS – When they arrived at the NFL Combine last year – or most of the past 25 years, for that matter – the Cowboys knew certain truths about the draft landscape.

When you’re picking No. 27 or No. 16 – or even No. 9 – certain aspects of the NFL draft aren’t feasible. Coveted talents like Cam Newton, Von Miller, Blake Bortles, Khalil Mack or Jameis Winston won’t be available to teams in the middle of the pack unless they come at far too great of a cost.

As the Dallas front office prepares to get an extended look at the cream of this year’s crop, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones knows that won’t be the case in 2016.

"If anything it probably requires more work, because now everybody is in play,” Jones said. “In the past you could probably bet that there's 10 or 12 players that you're not going to see and not going to be able to move up to get.”

Sitting at fourth overall in this year’s pecking order, there’s no option off limits this time around. It’s undeniable that one of this draft’s elite talents will be available with the No. 4 pick, and the Cowboys are also within striking distance of any prospect they might covet.

“I don’t know if pressure’s the right word but maybe it is,” Jones said. “You want to be successful with this pick and you certainly have a better chance to be successful when you’ve got more players that we’ll have rated high to choose from.”

There are no developmental quarterbacks. For the most part, It's an NFL myth.

I agree . I would like to see a list of these great developmental QBs that went on to have great careers.

Someone had a list of 2nd rounders over the last 15 years or whatever. Wow, it was not a pretty list

Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson that's a pretty good list right there of quarterbacks not taking in the first round

I was referring to the 2nd rd. but I get it, it's just the Brady's and Romos of the world are like winning the powerball lottery. It's a crap shoot either way, but it's just less of one in the first rd.

As a few others have mentioned I'm back and forth on taking one 4th. With Jerry thinking romo can play another 4 years or so, that tells me they won't. If not I'm all about trading down a few spots

Interesting list. Y.A. Tittle? Do we really have to go back to the 1940's to make a point? Steve Young was a first rounder pick was he not? I know AAron Rodgers was. The first overall pick was between Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith. 49ers chose Smith. It was just weird circumstances that he dropped as far as he did.

And Staubach would have been the first player taken in his draft if not for his naval commitments.

The best place to find franchise QB's are at the top of the draft. There is no guarantee at #4. We all know that. But your odds off success are higher there than the 3rd round.

Aaron Rogers and tony romo were both allowed to develope
Now the majority of qb's taken high in the draft start their first season. Some work out some don't. But some of those who don't might have had they had time to develope
Those guys taken in the 4th round or so to develope usually don't develope. But we're they really good prospects to begin with or were they reached because there is so much need at QB around the league?
I think any QB taken early could benefit from developing his abilities before starting with a few rare exception like a manning

This OL is prime for a blue chipper who can step in when Tony goes down, next year he'll be ready to start.
This draft will finish the offensive side of the ball, add a few pieces to the defense, next year we begin to compete.

Sure but when you compare the successes with all the QB failures from the 2nd round on, it's not pretty at all.

No argument about the latter. The point is most teams don't draft a QB and sit them anymore. Most of that was the cost involved but that has changed again. So we should see more QBs developed...IMO. YA Tittle was the 50s and 60s BTW.

I think we can compete this year but drafting a QB will cost a blue chipper on defense. That's for certain.

None of those QBs have done anything yet. Carr is turning into something good but hasn't done crap yet, Osweiller please....Cousins has had 1 good year....Dalton is the most accomplished of them all and even he hasn't won a playoff game yet.
