I think we can compete this year but drafting a QB will cost a blue chipper on defense. That's for certain.

I have to agree with Stephen, if a elite QB is there at 4, we have to take him. I am going to stick with spending the rest of the draft on defense, we can get a stud DT later on and more in the third. plus we have all the supplemental picks. We also can afford to be active in FA, which is the icing on the cake. I'm a believer that many of the issues this defense displayed last season can be attributed directly to 3 and outs by the offense, and a incredibly passive scheme by the DC. In a year or 2 this defense can be good enough, maybe not great, but good enough.

Sure but when you compare the successes with all the QB failures from the 2nd round on, it's not pretty at all.

Well when you compare the successes with all the QB failures from 1st rounders it ain't pretty either. Yet you still need a a good QB to succeed in the NFL, but for the most part it os a crap shoot selecting one.

None of those QBs have done anything yet. Carr is turning into something good but hasn't done crap yet, Osweiller please....Cousins has had 1 good year....Dalton is the most accomplished of them all and even he hasn't won a playoff game yet.

what is your standard? Qbs drafted and on a good team? All of those guys are good enough to win with and certainly deserved nfl starters. As good as someone like matt ryan on phil rivers and as good as or better than someone like joe flacco who has a super bowl ring.

Someone that has had sustained success in the NFL. Dalton meets that criteria. The others have not.

Osweiller has what, 5 games started? (and I'm an Osweiller fan being an Arizona State alumni)
Carr's Raiders were 7-9 this last year. Obviously looking up like I said before.
Cousins has had 1 good year. Let's see if he can do it again...RG3 and Kaepernick had a good year or two as well and look where they are..

I like this plan.

And I agree the offense kept the defense on its heels way way too much.

But the main problem this defense had last year was no pass rush and a lack of turnovers. I suspect the pass defense needs to improve as well but how much we won't know until the pass rush gets much better. We need mid 40s sacks at least.

We need:

1. Another legit 3 (Hardy?)
2. Another legit 5 (Hardy?)
3. An edge rusher preferably two
4. An athletic cover LBer
5. A cover Safety
6. 1-2 CBs who can cover AND tackle

I agree, but I also ask how much was the lack of pas rush self inflicted. If you don't bring a blitz now and then, and from all over the place, OL's don't have to guess, and that's a huge advantage. I also think when you are so abysmal at turnovers as we were, it cannot be a simple lack of talent.

Although I do agree with your list, I think we have 2 years to solve those and we can afford trying to find a gem or 2 with late picks and through FA.

I have a heck of a lot more faith in our drafting as of late, than I've had in a long time and I'm grateful to Jerry for that. I must say, I have more faith in Gregory than Hardy, I was a partying nutjob after college too, but the switch came on; luckily, much like Dez I got a grip.

Hardy if afraid, may just have bad wiring.

Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson that's a pretty good list right there of quarterbacks not taking in the first round

I bet the number of QBs that was drafted to get the four QBs that you listed shows just how unsuccessful developing a QB really is.

I don't think Marinelli trusted the back end enough to do a lot of blitzing. But I do think sometimes you just have to take the risk rather than die from a thousand cuts.

Player acquisition never stops but I get your drift we need two years to put a huge dent in that list. But IF they will consider Hardy then you solve the 3 and 5. Add Irving to that list along with DLaw although I'm nervous about the latter's health. That's from a lack of data more so than true knowledge of the situation. That leaves another pass rusher to acquire maybe two if you want an edge rusher and a traditional 4-3 DE. So that's two spots maybe three.

Not going to bore with each position but we can be competitive IF we address the DL first.

Dallas has there own workouts different skill set.For example rbs have to grab a six pack of underwear and time the 40 run form store security, defensively there's the weed challenge and a second domestic battery test. Finally we have the dink and dunk test for qbs and the yard short of the first down pattern test for the wrs

We didn't get to 4-12 easily. The amazing thing is the staff is intact. No need for change, all is well.

Don't forget the QB test where they show potential draft picks random pictures of women in entertainment and he has to try and name and rate the "sackability" of the Hollywood Starlet.......
