(Editor’s Note: With the offseason practices now complete, the Cowboys will take some downtime before departing for training camp on July 28. Until then, let’s focus on some of the more unknown rookies on this team, fighting for a roster spot. Today’s featured player is offensive tackle Chaz Green

Name: Chaz Green
Position: Offensive Tackle
College: Florida
Height/Weight: 6-5 / 314
Acquired: Draft (3rd Round, 91st overall)

Jersey Number: 79

Collegiate Career: A team captain, Green battled through injuries for most of collegiate career, starting in 30 of 50 games played. He did show some versatility to play both guard and tackle, and started games on both sides at tackles. Last year, after missing all of 2013 with a preseason injury, Green returned to play on the right side for nine games but had two starts on the left. In 2011, Green was a Freshman All-American after starting nine games.

Did You Know? Green was one of the top-rated players in the country coming out of high school in 2010, highlighted by a No. 6 ranking among offensive lineman by Rivals.com. Green’s recruitment included Ohio State, Georgia, USC and Tennessee.

2105 Outlook: Immediately after the draft, Green was the highest-profiled lineman in the Cowboys’ class of 2015, but that changed when La’el Collins was signed. Still, the versatile rookie will be used at both guard and tackle. He was making solid progress in the OTAs before needing offseason hip surgery, which could limit his time during training camp. He has a chance to be placed on PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) that could sideline him for the first six weeks of the season. When healthy, Green has a chance to move into the role of a swing tackle, with his experience on both sides of the line and then perhaps working in a future starter.

Scout’s Take:
  • Will struggle to sustain the block. Tends to catch more than push.
  • Extends his hands. Tries to muscle his man.
  • Can drive his man down inside.
  • Will get stalemated at times.
  • Plays on his feet, but there are snaps when he gets a little over extended. Feet can be good in pass protection.

Here's hoping that his hip surgery renders him able to perform better in the longrun. Glad to see he got it out of the way without it lingering and possibly causing him problems later on.

I think with green it's gonna be about can he physically perform in camp
If not gonna be tough to have any impact this season
My guess if he starts the season on the pup he doesn't see the field this year

Not sure what kind of surgery he had other than generic hip surgery.

He will see no playing time this year, no way Red plays him after missing OTAs and TC,,, this guy is as Green as they come!

Unless there is a setback he isn't expected to miss all of TC, maybe just the start. He will probably be doing the conditioning drills with cords at the start.

My opinion..for what its worth: I personally believe Green was a bit of a reach, but that's not a knock on his talent potential per say. I think he could have been had later in the draft, although I do understand where the FO was coming from when they made the pick. The coaches like him and can see potential. The OL just let a solid back up walk in Jeremy Parnell and needed to sure-up the strength of this team in order to give new starters Randle and/or McFadden a chance. They had no way of knowing that Collins was going to fall into their laps. With our OL depth as crowded as it is, a full year to get acclimated health, strength, & intelligent wise will go a long way next year. I can see Ronald Leary having a handsome payday by another team next year like Parnell did. I mean.. if our back ups are getting paid 5y- $32mil, Imagine what a free-agent starter is going to get after another year with the "Best OL In Football". This red-shirt year for Green will have him ready to battle Collins for the right to start.

Once they got Collins, they didn't need green this year. Just put him on ice until next year

I think the decision to have him return to TC or stay on the PUP will be based on the progress of Weems and possibly Collins if he practices at OT.

I know the reports from Broaddus indicate that Collins will remain at Guard, but I'm not certain that makes the most sense. Leary is a good player and Bernadeau is a proven backup. At OT Free is gimpy and they have no backup options that have ever played a snaps in the NFL. In theory, Collins should be the most talented option. Obviously, he was not going to look good at RT in OTAs considering that he always played on the left in college, but will they really rely on Weems and Green returning from surgery? I don't see Gibson as a legit option this year because he was very raw in college. They have practice squad player Wetzel who did OK in the preseason last year, but that seems like a stretch to expect much from him.

I'm hoping he justifies the draft spot he got taken in. My bigger concern going forward with the OL is how everything comes together with Callahan gone. He really did a great job with a young unit. Don't like him in Washington at all.

He was also given a ton of talent. The OL didn't really hit their stride until they added their 3rd first round pick to the unit...not to mention Free is a proven solid player and Leary would have been drafted higher if not for his health.

Red shirt year. Frankly I could see him on IR and Gibson on the practice squad. There really is no room for these guys right now. Good problem to have.

We won't carry more than 3 backups on game day. Barring injury they are Mack, Collins and Weems

I don't know how much longer that Bernadeau lasts, beyond this season. I want Collins to fill at guard, and have longevity added to Leary's career with him being first up inside for this line.

I am actually intrigued by what is projecting with the talent of Weems, Green, and Gibson as to tackles into the future.
