Yes, the outcry was all based on the media analysts rankings. The reality is that the analysts focus 90% of their efforts on the top 50.So, maybe we can cut our coaches and scouts a little slack?
The public's judgement of that pick last spring was a bit harsh and premature (as always). It's fair to say that even the so-called "draft experts" may not have actually studied every player on the planet, and the immediate shock of a lesser-known choice is likely an admission of ignorance about the player.
The recent draft success has had a direct impact on the cost of the roster, frequency of injuries, cohesiveness, and wins.
Those same analysts originally thought Jacskson Jeffcoat would be a 2nd but in reality he was a UDFA. The media guys like Kiper use the term "falling" but in reality many of those players were never ranked highly by NFL teams. The more players that rise or fall, the more inaccurate the analysts initial rankings were.
I would love to see the December rankings of NFL teams. My guess is the draft day rankings are not significantly different except for character and medical issues. I don't think any NFL team had Jeffcoat as a 2nd/3rd at any point in time.
It's too bad the NFL does not require NFL teams to release their draft boards after the draft. It's not much of a competitive disadvantage issue after the draft is over. They can't even throw the fans a bone by keeeping roster weights accurate.
