Lot of fans on their Pat's message board surprised by the move, had him as a back-up on their 53 projections and thought he played well in preseason games.

Just like lots of us fans on this board will be surprised by the Cowboy cuts. And then will come the JJ and Garrett bashing again as armchair GMs tell us how much smarter they are than the coaches and how they would have done it.

Understood, but aside from that, I get the feeling this guy will get claimed off waiver wires by a team, and I hope it's ours.

Fans thinking someone playing well and coaches thinking someone is playing well are two different things. The real question you have to ask yourself is who was he going up against? First teamers? Second teamers? was he playing in the 4th quarter of the 4th pre-season game? There is a reason team makes the cuts they do, it doesn't mean that because we recognize the name we should just go pick them up right away. Given the fact that he may or may not fit what we want to do

I didn't recognize the name, I googled it after I heard he was cut, saw the rave reviews and surprises, figured he was worth making a thread about to see what others know, and to throw it out there that he looks better than what I've seen from Wilber. I can tell that much already.

Have you watched every play he's been a part of? or only the highlights? and said well he made he more highlights than Wilber so he must be better? Im just curious as to how you know he's better than Wilber?

Wilber sucks, he never gets to the passer. However, Bernard's reviews (I haven't been watching his film bro) are SOLID, and they are by people who write about the Pats for a living. He's thread worthy! lol

He was a guy I was hoping Dallas would bring in on the cheap during the offseason. Still think he could contribute as a situational guy in the right circumstance.

A big worry for the Patriots, though, must have been scheme fit, because Marcus Benard, likeJermaine Cunningham, projects better as a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE. The Patriots also do this incredibly annoying wrinkle on passing downs where they bring in an edge rusher at DT in order to rush the passer in sub-packages, and it absolutely never works out. Don’t tell me that Cunningham benefited from that, because he obviously didn’t. The Patriots also used this with Benard at points during the preseason, and it never worked out either. Benard is clearly not a good run defender as a 4-3 DE, but he is versatile, a quality pass rusher, and he can cover too.

Sometimes its not a question of skill but fit...

Just saying, this isn't training camp where we can just bring in guys and see, we have to be sure about the guys we are bringing in

(from guy above me)

backs up what I just said thanks:

"Benard was the most consistent backup defensive end on the roster this offseason, and he almost made good on his tag as a sleeper to make the 53-man roster. The edge rusher also had a really nice game against the Giants with a sack, but Bequette also recorded a sack. Benard could have been a useful piece for the Patriots at DE, because he can be the kind of pass rushing specialist who can bring solid pressure on the quarterback."

Just to throw a wrench in the rain parade, I've seen Wilber absolutely scream off the edge. He's not been given much opportunity. Just sayin.

I'm not against the idea, especially with Spencer still iffy. Don't mind Selvie starting, but Bernard could be brought in on passing downs.

Right now, Wilber is not that much of a threat as a pass rusher.

Um, everything the FO does is open to scrutiny, deal with it.
