I've got a dead hard drive and wanted to know what everyone uses to recover data.

Right now I'm getting a "The disk in drive F is not formatted." error message but by using a program File Scavenger 3.0 I was able to see some of the data on the disk. Is there an easy/cheap way to get back my files or should I spend the $50 on a recovery program?

Have you heard of a "data migration kit"? You might be able to find one cheap on Ebay or Craigslist.

Sounds like you will need to get a program if you are not able to do it via dos.

I have heard of the one bbgun mentioned but have not used it.

If you have a second pc you could always install the drive in to it as a slave drive. I have done this many many times and on occasion windows fixes the error on the drive and makes it useable again.

Either you are looking for a place to listen to the grateful dead, or you are trying to get a free plane ride. :laugh1:
