DeAngelo Hall vs. Terence Newman

Was just watching the ESPN presentation that named all the Pro Bowl starters and of course, Hall made it. Hall was drafted a year later than Newman, was picked #8 instead of #5. He has the same amount of interceptions as Newman in his first two years, although Hall did miss 6 games in his rookie season. He missed the last game this season too. He's been injury prone. Newman had problems with injuries last year too, but never missed a game.

Do you think Hall deserves a spot above Newman? From what I've seen, he hasn't done anything different than Newman to be considered the best at his position. I'll admit that Newman slipped a little in his second year, but what does he have to do to get the kind of love Hall is already getting? Newman was a silent shutdown corner this year with Dallas, I don't know what more he has to do.

Both good players.

I will take either one of them....

Just go look at the DT position last year. The DT for Atlanta escapes me, but that guy should have went to the Pro Bowl way before Glover did last year.

This year the DT from Atlanta had another stellar year, he gets in.

People get screwed in this thing....not the first time and not the last time...

Continued...

Rod Coleman - 2004
Team goes to the NFC Championship Game
11.5 Sacks
40 Tackles
1 Int
1 TD
5 Pass Deflections

Stats

La'Roi Glover - 2004
Team sat at home for the Playoffs
7 Sacks
41 Tackles
0 Ints
0 TDs
1 Pass Deflection

Stats

Rod Coleman should have been in the Pro Bowl, but La'Roi Glover went.....he followed it up in 2005 and now he is in the Pro Bowl.

Point is, if you continue to be good, you eventually get in....

For some positions, publicity and big plays is a bigger factor in making the Pro Bowl than anything else. Since there are no league-wide stats available for cornerbacks shutting down receivers, people vote based on what they know. And what people saw was DeAngelo Hall getting hyped on Monday Night football, holding up signs on TV to promote himself for the Pro Bowl, making a few big plays in between allowing catches and having his coach talk about how great he is. Newman was much better at shutting down receivers, but he didn't get as many interceptions and didn't get hyped by the media, his coach or himself. It took someone to tell Dr. Z, "psst, look at what Newman did" for him to even get that honor. It's like he was the best kept secret in the NFL. If a few more people notice, next year Newman could give up even more plays than he did this year but get more accolades, just because of what he did this season.

What their teams did in the playoffs (or didn't do) is irrelevant considering they get voted into the probowl about a month before the playoffs even start.

My point was that he played on a team that was highly successful and therefore didnt lack for any media coverage...

Newman doesn't gamble enough to lead the NFC in int's. Henry and Glenn on the other hand do. Newman just stays glued to his guy and doesn't allow any separation. On the other hand Henry really gambles a lot and tries to jump routes and so does Glenn. If Newman would gamble like Henry does he could lead in picks, but he would give up more big plays that way.

A good consistent pass rush would allow our DBs to jump more routes. As it is, they know that opposing QBs will likely have time to wait for a double move to develop. If our DBs knew opposing QBs probably wouldn't have that much time, they could get more picks.

You got it right there, Mister Green.

Newman is one year removed from a very poor season. He was outstanding this season. If he duplicates that performance, he will make it.

Newman didn't have a bad year last year. He had two poor games and one where a couple of short TDs were thrown on him.

he had one huge game on natnl TV, newman did not

All about recognizable names... That's obviously the reason that Larry Allen keeps getting a free trip to Hawaii... Larry Allen is probably the most recognizable offensive lineman because back in the Cowboy heyday in the 90's, when Madden and Summerall were doing games, Madden would make a LA comment this, LA comment that, on every other play. He is easily the most recognizable name of offensive lineman when fans vote for the Pro-bowl players. :laugh1:

So he made the Pro Bowl because of a play that was wiped out by a penalty?

That's why I keep saying, get this Defense to become dominant. And then you will see a whole different football team out there.

We will be known for knocking folks in the mouth, and teams will fear us even before we take the field. WE can't make both sides of the ball Dominant, so make the Defense since we're halfway there. Just make the offense average, and so we can atleast manufacture a couple of TD's and a couple of 3 FG's and we are superbowl bound.

And with an outstanding front 7, INT's will start to pour in, and Newman will be a star, and people will notice.
