From the remodeled environs of Air Cowboys America, with 50,000 watts of radio power and where the truth is supreme, direct from Farmers Branch where we re-live the 50s ever day.

Hail fellows and knowledgable Cowboy fans: I was going to send an open letter to Brian Stewart, our esteemed defensive coordinator, and wish him best of luck.
However, it is a safe bet that he'd just ignore it.
Instead I will posit this premise on my esteemed and geeky fellows at the Zone.

Last year, I believe, Stew did not bring out the best in our Cowboys defense.
Yes, 13-3 is nothing to sniff at but I feel the defense could have been even better. Especially in giving up big running and dump-off plays down the middle.

Blitzes never came at the right time. At times, the defense seemed lost. Also, the seeming inability to touch the QB. So close but yet so far away.
The misuse of a struggling Roy Williams. (My god, what was RW doing on man to man in the Red Zone!!!

And the misguided and plentiful use of Jacques Reeves. Sigh.

And for some reason, special teams do not conjure highlight reels.

Yea, we hath faith in ye but we need to see a much more aggressive, attacking defense with CONSTANT blitz packages. Man to man coverage with Pac-Man, Henry and Newman that will free up a jail-break kind of attack on the opposing backfield.

So, Stew. Don't screw it up.
Garrett, I guarantee you, will have the offense revved up.

If we fail it will because of you. You need to adjust to the overwhelming talents of Ware, Spencer, Canty, Ratliff and Johnson and supplemented by Ellis, Thomas and a rejuenated Spears. Yes, Spears.

Some criticize Wade style as HC. But Wade should be the defensive coordinator. The Dallas D is too important to leave to a Brian Stewart who doesn't/can't adjust in games and especially seemed lost in the second half against the Giants.

Wadda you think about Stew? Am I wrong or am I right, esteemed fellows of the grid iron?

A few comments...
First off, I find it hard for a defense to blitz and apply constant pressure when the CBs (mainly 35 & 33) couldn't cover my son's Pop Warner widouts!
Secondly, I thought Wade was "heavy-handed" with the defense-meaning his focus was mainly on that side of the ball. So doesn't their inability to perform up to GTB's standards fall on him also? It seems like he's making Stew the fall guy, IMO.
Lastly, if what came out this offseason was true (the rumors on infighting within the coaching ranks) wouldn't that undermine anything Phillips & Stewart were trying to establish? How could they run as a cohesive unit when the asst coaches weren't even on the same page?

I say give them a pass for last season and let's see what happens this season. If they cannot perform as a top 5 unit with all of the talent they have THEN you can throw Stew and Wade under the bus! They have their own coaches and the players pretty much know the system so there should be no excuses (barring health, of course)...

The run D was top ten. We were top ten in sacks. If it wasn't for injury and having Reeves and Nate Jones as our CB's the Cowboys would of been top ten there too.

Yeah, why on Earth would you play Jacques Reeves when Champ Bailey is on your roster behind Newman and Henry!

Oh wait.

This is the 1st I've heard of this, could you add more insight to what was going on within the defensive staff last year?

I thought our defense held the Giants to 40-50ish yards in that second half ??? We all know it's Wade's unit anyway, Stewey is just the figurehead.

There was an article in the Star-Telegram that stated Paul Pasqualoni, Todd Bowles, and Kacy Rogders had their own "agenda" last season. Apparently they were ticked because none on the "in-house" position coaches were given the DC job and tried to undermine Stewart's authority.
