After reading the live DMN blog on this morning's practice, I was pleased and impressed with the pass rush that gave our first team tackles all they could handle. We know DWare and Ratliff can bring it, so it's no surprise to read that they were beating our backup QB to his drop and abusing McQ and Free at times. However, I really enjoyed reading about BWilliams and VButler putting some serious pass rushes on Flozell and Columbo.
We all know that the first team defense doesn't work against the first team offense in practice during the year, so who were the backup OLB's who were providing our starting offense its preparation last season? Probably Rogers and Carpenter most of the time. Going out and bringing in a large haul of OLB's with pass rush ability, along with more speed at CB and Safety, not to mention the incredible speed and blitz looks from our young ILBs this year has got to pay huge dividends.
Obviously, the defense is going to have more quality depth and talented guys to groom for possible future opportunities, and we all anticipate these guys improving our special teams play. I think an under-rated aspect to this year's draft will be the practice speed and pass rush that our OL will be seeing every day in practice. No, this isn't high school or even college...we know practice doesn't involve tackling and often involves very little contact in an NFL practice. Still, when your OT's work on their technique and quickness every day against guys who are actually quality pass rushers rather than guys who are just "guys on the roster", it has to make a positive contribution and less of a total lack of comparison between practice and game day.
