I must admit I really liked what I saw with the 4-3 DL. Bowen, Hoyte, Hatcher, and you could really see how much those guys helped Ware get some sacks.
Thing that puzzles me is why were we dropping our LB's so deep?
Article that Adam posted where Lions commented on how they exploited us was very telling.
Even though we lost I saw some positives from the 4-3.
How do we fix this guys?
The 4-3 is a joke. We basically gave up 36 points on defense, to the freaking Lions and Kitna threw at will against us with backup O-Linemen and a 3rd string RB. And in the second half, we hardly had any pressure on Kitna and if we got a sack it was mostly a cover sack.
The thing is about the LB's is it's mostly Bradie James. Watch the game over again and most of the targets are Bradie's responsibility. And for every game they drop too far back in coverage, they wind up having a game where they don't drop far back enough.
If I had it my way, we'd be able to have a defense that would run mostly 3-4, some 4-3, and then the rest in the nickel. With our defense, James is mostly responsible for the short passes and he's probably the worst MLB/ILB in the game at it. Getting that straightened out will help out a lot. But we've got do so many fundamental things better....like disguising blitzes, occasionally stunting, occasionally zone blitzing, etc. We could also use a solid cover FS to backup Watkins and then put in at SS in the nickel. That could move Roy to LB in the nickel and we'd be much faster and a better cover team in the nickel, plus Roy blitzes better than James.
Essentially, while it's not all completely Zimmer's fault...he doesn't know how to coordinate a good pass rush and we are so simplistic to figure out on defense, we wind up making life too easy for opposing offenses.
