Defensive First Impressions

Ok so let's be honest; there was a lot of hype on these forums and all throughout the media and how Wade's aggressive defensive approach to the 3-4 and the difference between the system that Parcells used would make the Cowboys defensive personnel better and we would see more pressure on the QB. So honestly, what were your initial impressions last night?

I would like to see more pressure as well,,,but it too soon to pass judegment. I doubt Wade would show his hand in pre-season play anyway.

It's preseason. I highly doubt we're going to see any of his regular season schemes anyway.

While there weren't a large number of sacks, I thought they put more pressure on the quarterback than they had.

I would like to see the number of blitzes they actually used.

And I'm thinking Wade is saving the more exotic stuff for when it counts.

Just like Sean Payton did last year.

Even if we did see the schemes, its gonna take a while to get them down and run properly.

Last night was very vanilla (for Wade). We'll do a lot more than that once the season starts.

But we still did a couple of things, and did get a lot more pressure than usual. What I liked was that whether we hit the QB or not, we were definitely making the ball come out early, which is still accomplishing something.

I agree only issue I had with them was some poor tackling here and there but I don't think that will be a problem as they move forward.

I agree. I did not see a lot of blitzing nor did I expect that we would. Even on the plays we blitzed we sent 5 guys most of the time we were only sending 4.

Now isn't the time to be concerned with pressure or lack there of... No way we used our full blitz packages etc for the first preseason game. Now if we still aren't getting pressure in week 3 or 4 of the regular season, then chalk me up with the group that is concerned with the lack of pressure.

Everyone seems to have the same basic thought of no concern as the result of Dallas running a base D. I agree with everything that has been said. I wanted to add a poll, but either:

a) The feature has been removed.
b) I don't have access to the poll feature.
c) I am an idiot.

When Ferguson not playing read and react allows him to use his colossal strength and it showed in the game. They were double teaming him left and right. When they didn't; he pushed the center several feet into the backfield.

I think you have to be a "zone supporter" to start poll threads.

They used a few of those packages at the top of the 3rd quarter, that's more like what we'l see all game in the regular season. They were coming from everywhere.

so the answer is B, and I am not an idiot after all... I know I used to be able to post polls but couldn't find it earlier.

What options did you want for the poll? I can add it to the thread if you really want it.

Not bad for vanilla.

They didn't get as much pressure as we'd like in the regular season, but I thought the scheme looked more dynamic. And they did score a defensive touchdown. That counts for something.

It'll be fun to watch them use their entire defensive playbook once the season starts.

I would hope that we wouldn't need a lot of intricate blitzes to generate a pass rush, because intricate blitzing tends to giftwrap easy TD's against good offenses. I was hoping just asking the DL to play 1 gap would generate some pressure, but on that play where Manning had about 10 seconds to throw the ball that didn't appear to be the case.

Outside of Ware, I didn't see anyone on our first team base defense beating their man on pass rush. No matter how much you want to spice it up, trench play still revolves around beating the guy in front of you.
