What's made the corner position what is today (critically important) is all the passing teams do and the stud WRs that the rules favor. With as pass happy as the league has become and the rules bent to promote it having a corner who can lockdown on some of these big, fast incredibly talented WRs is a tremendous asset that can improve a defense.
That factors into it. But Deion made the position glamorous. The pass-happy offenses makes stars out of
quarterbacks and
receivers.
If you listen to the kids even today, if they have to emulate a quarterback, they'll say
Brady or
Manning,
Montana or
Elway.
When they want to be like another receiver, they'll say
Moss or
Jerry Rice.
But when they want to emulate a corner, they almost in unison will say
DEION. They don't say
Rod Woodson or
Richard Sherman or even
Darrell Revis. They say
"Deion Sanders"!
My son (who plays corner) wasn't even born at the height of Deion's popularity, and he models his game after Deion.
Deion is the reason why corners even get attention in this pass-happy league. Otherwise, all the glory would go to receivers and quarterbacks.
