Deion Sanders: Cowboys were 'way off' in evaluating Roy Williams

Deion Sanders spoke last week to ESPN Radio about the Cowboys. Some highlights:

On whether Cowboys' wide receiver Roy Williams' playing time will be based on merit or the size of his contract: "Well, it's gonna be merit. I mean, it's gonna be tough to justify Roy being out there and not producing. Roy can produce; he can produce in specified situations. Roy's not the kinda guy that's gonna run certain routes; any routes that he has to run that causes him to stop his feet and start back again, that's not his specialty. The slants, the quick-nines, routes like that, the crossing routes - he's gonna do that well. But, the routes running 15, digging in, coming back out, 15, digging in, running the end route; that's kinda tough 'cuz he's a big fella."

On whether Roy Williams could get open on Deion, who's been out of the league four or five years: "Nah, not even when I roll outta bed for breakfast (laughter). Roy can play, but he's never gonna be what you guys expect him to be because of the circumstances, you know, givin' away first-round picks and the type of contract stipulations; that's kinda tough, especially with the emergence of Austin, man."

On how far off the Cowboys were in evaluating Roy Williams: "Way off. I know Martin Mayhew, who played the other cornerback at Florida State when I played . . . he's the GM at the Detroit Lions (Williams' former team), he was clapping with his feet when they (the Cowboys) called (laughter); and that's kinda hard unless you're limber. But he was clapping with his feet when the Cowboys called to acquire Roy Williams."

On the Cowboys' offense:"Because the offense was pretty darned good last year. We critique, critiqued them because we have so many expectations of that offense, but, in all fairness, Jason Garrett did a pretty good job. There were a few games we just saw them crumble in the end, and we weren't happy about that, especially with the type of players that they have."

On the play of the Cowboys cornerbacks: "T-New (Terence Newman) has got to get his confidence back. He does. I'm not saying he's scared; I don't believe he's scared. He's never scared. But he has to play with that swagger that he once played. I know. I was on that island longer than Gilligan. (laughter) T-New is not playing with his swagger. Now, the next progression with Mike Jenkins, now, he has to go to the next level; and I think he's capable of doing it, but it's gonna come a lot of study and preparation. . . I'm telling you, in this league, you need five corners, man, because you're not gonna make it throughout a whole season with all your corners healthy. Therefore, you need five corners to be balanced, to have the type of secondary that you need, and a good ball-hawking safety in centerfield."

I respect Deion, but I disagree totally on T-New. When healthy, Newman is a top 10 CB in the NFL. I thought his play this year was incredibly underrated and was a major factor in the Boys #2 defense rating.

Yes.

Lets use deion sanders evaluations cause he is biased and informed.

I wouldn't listen to his evaluations on whether or not ice cream is cold.

I wish this guy would move to atlanta and just get off the radio and tv around here and go become a falcons expert.

Oh good, another thread about Deion's opinions of Roy Williams. It was about time for one. We hadn't had one in almost 24 hours.

So the thread title isn't that the Cowboys misevaluated T-New... It was that they misevaluated Roy... And some other thoughts on T-New.

Either way, *** off, Deion.

Wonder if Jerry is still such big buds with him after all the shots he's taken at us (and thus Jerry) lately.

in a sense yes and no, you can only put so much in title, but deion did put down tnew a little

i agree with him to a point on tnew, you do remember the big pass play where chargers wr goes right by tnew without a jam, and same thing happened in minnesotta game,

so something is up with tnew

RW isn't playing like a good 2 much less a 1.

TNew isn't as good as he once was.

There were offensive problems last year.

I don't always like Deion's style and I certainly don't agree with everything he says. I wouldn't say things like Deion either. He's right this time.

Horrible thread title.... Misleading, one would think Deion is saying Dallas misjudged Williams AND Newman.

I'm not sold on Williams, but when Deion trusts Mayhew, who evals talent on the worst franchise in the NFL, then I take it with a grain of salt...

The Lions are TERRIBLE...

You know most of that crime was committed by Matt Millen...

I think Mayhew is gonna be a good one.

He sure did take Jerry to the cleaners...

Where's the part about Deion being "way off" in evaluating Miles Austin?

Oh, goodie. Deion letting us know about the importance of hard work and preparation in becoming an elite CB. Don't leave out the part about the importance of a comfy chair, Prime Time. Make sure Jenkins gets that part, too.

Jerry probably realizes that it's a business. Jerry knows what sells when talking about the Cowboys.
